Libby Day is a lifeless woman who survived the massacre of her family in their farmhouse in the countryside of Kansas when she was eight. She's been living on donations and lectures ever since. Thirty years ago, the police believed that a satanic cult was responsible for the murder of her mother and two sisters, and her brother Ben was convicted with her testimony in court. Today, however, an acquaintance, Lyle Wirth, invites Libby to visit "The Kill Club", where amateurs investigate famous crimes, and she finds that they believe Ben is innocent. Libby needs money and, in return, accepts to revisit the slaughter of her family and comes up to the painful revelations and the ultimate truth.
As the sole survivor of the Kinnakee massacre back in 1985 which cost her entire family, Libby Day convinced that her brother Ben dabbles with the occult, names him as the deranged killer, sending him, consequently, in prison. Eventually, almost thirty years after the ghastly incident, Libby embittered and nearly broke, she will inevitably accept the offer of Lyle Wirth, a "True Crime Club" member, to share her side of the story at their annual meeting. However, Libby by digging deep into her traumatic past, she will begin to doubt her brother's guilt, furthermore, not only will she realise that the real murderer may still be on the loose but also that even though there can be more than one sides to a story, the truth has only one.
The best thing about this movie about the investigation into a decades old murder of a mother and 2 daughters is that things make sense and come together. I have been so used to movie mysteries that are irritating, illogical or unresolved. It was so refreshing that everything is explained in a plausible way and there were no red herrings.
On top of that you have some fine performances by some of the finest actresses out there. Christina Hendricks is touching and believable as a beleaguered mom with so many problems: financial, nasty ex, children. Simply outstanding. She was the best actress on 'Mad Men' and I hope she gets many more movie roles. Chloe Grace Moretz shows she can play a bad girl just as well as her sweet roles and action roles. Charlize is totally watchable and sympathetic a central figure as the surviving daughter if just a tad too beautiful even when trying to disguise her beauty beneath the baseball cap. The men are supporting but pivotal. Nicholas Hoult and Corey Stoll are well cast.
I found Gone Girl's story a bit simplistic and vulgar. Dark Places is more original, better constructed and the characters are more multi faceted and sympathetic. The tension is more palpable. It also shows terrible human behavior and selflessness in the characters that is quite unexpected.
Ignore any bad reviews and watch this one. It's a fine movie.
Dark Places is a multi genre movie. It's got a lot of mystery and thriller throughout, it's also got a whole lot of drama, given what the characters go through. The cast is absolutely wonderful. Charlize Theron was a perfect casting choice for the lead role of Libby Day. She plays her role with a sense of strength but also a lot of pain from her past and vulnerability. Nicholas Hoult was good, his character wasn't really a game changer here but nevertheless he's good. Chloe Grace Moretz was very impressive here, she plays a very dark character, and she pulls it off effortlessly. The plot is very interesting and the movie executes it very well. It keeps you invested the entire way through, mostly because it makes you care for its characters and you want to know the truth about what happened. The film doesn't disappoint in the end. It satisfies in the end, I was very happy with the result of what actually happened and with how the characters ended up. I definitely encourage everyone who likes this type of movie to watch it. You won't be let down. 8/10 for Dark Places.
It’s never pushed far enough. Instead, Dark Places just becomes an overstuffed, low-simmer potboiler with too many improbable detours and overly convenient twists.
In the book it explains that Patty Day had hired the hitman to kill her, she didn't specify how she wanted to die just that it would be quick- and on the agreement that no one would see. So in the book there's a knock on the door extremely late at night, she goes to answer it and the guy goes to stab her in the heart but he misses, ends up stabbing her a second time and then one of her kids see's so he kills her as well (Debby i think?). But obviously as far as Patty knows Libby will come to no harm as she leaves her in that room away from the killer and has arranged for her sister to come by very early the next morning to find her body. a5c7b9f00b
