Sarah Manning, a streetwise Brit by upbringing, has had a difficult life, living in foster care with a flamboyantly gay foster brother, artist Felix Dawkins, both under the care of their equally tough foster mother Siobhan Sadler, who eventually moved them all to Toronto. All single Sarah really wants is to provide a comfortable and stable life for her adolescent daughter, Kira. Sarah's life changes in an instant when she witnesses a woman who looks exactly like her commit suicide by stepping in front of a train. Witnessing that event is the first step to Sarah discovering that she was and is part of a cloning project, two of her other "sisters", suburban soccer mom Alison Hendrix and Ph.D. microbiology candidate Cosima Niehaus, along with her who collectively try to uncover the nature of the project, including who may be constantly watching them, and if there are other sisters out there about which they do not know. They will find that not all of their sisters would work toward the same goals as them, and that a parallel project has a completely different set of identicals. SPOILER: Orphan Black follows outsider, orphan and street-wise chameleon Sarah. After witnessing a woman's suicide, Sarah assumes the stranger's identity - who happens to look just like her. Expecting to solve all her problems by cleaning out the dead woman's savings, Sarah is instead thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery as she realizes the dizzying truth - she and the dead woman are clones. As Sarah searches for answers, she discovers the chilling fact that there are more people like her out there - genetically identical individuals who were planted in unsuspecting birth parents and nurtured in completely different circumstances. With no idea who created the clones, she'll need to discover the reason in a hurry as an assassin is killing them one by one. It's true, what all the prior reviewers have said: ORPHAN BLACK may just be the best kept secret in TV land. Granted it's Canadian AND distributed by the BBC -- so no blame for never hearing about it. This is not a popular or even well known show. And truth be told it IS a rather complicated affair, in terms of it's content. It's more science than sci-fi. So for most people, one assumes, it's just going to be too complex and heady for them. For others it may be too intense. This show occasionally crosses the line into horror -- why I don't know. It's unnecessary and not that enjoyable when it does. But besides those moments, it's generally an extremely intriguing story -- one of the most unique since LOST or FRINGE. There's never been anything like it before, so in that regard it's quite special. It's hard to review without spoilers, so suffice it to say that due to the main plot and story line the acting by Tatiana is SUPERB! It also happens to be one of the coolest & most riveting story lines of all time. I must say I am quite surprised they made it through two full seasons and were able to sign on for a third. It's just SO far out there... Kind of like TOUCH: a great show that was real far out there.... just too much for the average mainstreamer to get into. This show is similar. BUT....somehow they DID manage to get a Season 3. So there must be other fans out there. Frankly I can't wait for it. Give this one some patience. It gets better as it continues. I love classic literature. This TV series is right up there with the best classic novels that I read and reread. It is classified as sci-fi, which I understand, because there is a scientific "what if" theme at the core. I just hope people who don't usually like sci-fi don't let the genre label turn them off, because that would be a real shame. The writing is incredibly smart. The acting pushes the limit of human ability. Tatiana Maslany plays different characters so well that it is very hard to believe you are watching the same person. I have never seen anything this good on television in my 57 years. This stunning series proves that a televised fiction series can be raised to the level of art. Amazing music. Strong character development, combined with heart pounding action. If you haven't seen any of it and you are going to start watching the series, do it on a day you can stay up all night because you won't want to stop until you have seen every episode available to you.
