In the year 2019, a plague has transformed almost every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind. In a world 10 years into the future, vampires make up the vast majority of the population with only 5% of the human race remaining. This presents particular challenges as the vampires' food supply - human blood - is dwindling and rationing is now the norm. There is growing evidence that vampires deprived of an adequate blood supply are themselves evolving into wild, vile creatures that attack anyone and anything in order to survive. Dr. Edward Dalton, a vampire and hematologist who works for a pharmaceutical firm, has been working on finding an artificial blood supply that will meet the vampire society's needs. He is sympathetic to humans and sees his work as a way of alleviating their suffering but his views on finding a solution change considerably when he meets someone who found a way to transform himself from being a vampire to again take human form. daybreakers would have been a better movie if the story slowed down in a few areas, I enjoyed the movie visually but nagging holes in the plot and the cliff hanger ending left me feeling annoyed

a few of the obvious issues with plot

sunlight causes an instant violent eruption of flames that disintegrates the vampire within seconds but not for Ethan Hawk's character, he's completely unscathed.. not even a mark. and how realistic is it to consider that in the 10 years since the vampire plague outbreak no one has tried putting out a flaming vampire? come on given the lax attitude about sunlight with the scene where Hawk walks around on a sunny day under the shade of a tree you would think everyone had a futuristic personal fire extinguisher. and the shade under that tree would probably block about as much direct sunlight as a cloudy day, are we going with vampires can walk around in the daylight as long as its cloudy or the uv index is low?

the entire human refugee operation was just weak the human group take vans out at night to pick up more people and bring them to safety. why wouldn't you want to do that in the day time?**spoiler** when a tire get shot out on the first van why does everyone get out and start shooting instead of driving away in the other 2 vans. why wouldn't you jump back in the van and drive away on the rim. Dafoe's character supposedly specialized in futuristic vehicle upgrades why wouldn't he put those re-inflating tires on his super critical rescue vans. and then one of the vampire infantry guys picks up the radio and inexplicably they've found the hidden human outpost that was a 2 hour drive away. did they somehow trace the call? don't these people have text messaging?

and when the human group flees to that cabin.. at least that trip is during the day but when they all **spoiler** turn up dead that entire scene seems really thin with plot, i think it could have been one of the better parts in the movie instead it was a raced over bland emotional wash.

and the ending where they **spoiler** ride off leaving the building where the blood substitute was going to be mass produced.. after they witnessed the cure spreading at a viral rate.. seemed like an opportunity to end the movie in a cool way with the cure being spread like an outbreak or with clever tampering of the blood substitute supply to contain cured blood.. was just blindly skipped over. there was no substance to the ending, a sacrifice not really required to leave room for a sequel. Vampirism seems like a disease in Hollywood these days, so "Daybreakers" will fall immediately go under the lens of skepticism. Believe it or not, however, Michael and Peter Spierig's film separates itself through high concept futuristic science fiction. Although it ultimately spirals into an emotionless bloodbath, kudos to the film-making duo for taking the out-of-control vampire sub-genre somewhere it actually hasn't indeed been before.

"Daybreakers" hardly falls into the realm of hard science, but it blends the concept of the apocalyptic epidemic with vampire culture well enough for the sake of entertaining science fiction. The film hypothesizes that if in 2019 humanity were to all become vampires (the inevitable outcome of any kind of vampirism epidemic), then humans would become a precious commodity until a human blood substitute could be found, which would cause a myriad of social issues.

Like any respectable sci-fi flick ought to, the Spierig brothers carefully establish their vampire-dominated society and some compelling characters within it. Ethan Hawke stars as Edward Dalton, (seriously, what's with naming vampires Edward?) the chief hematologist responsible for finding a long-term blood substitute for Charles Bromley's (Sam Neill) human blood-harvesting company. In fact, "Daybreakers" might have the most intelligently crafted societal context for a film that's ultimate goal is entertainment through blood and mayhem.

Edward sympathizes with humans and in a chance meeting, comes across some (led by Claudia Karvan and Willem Defoe) who might hold a key to a solution to the vampire problem.

A few subplots try and add some depth to the story and characters, such as Edward's relationship to his brother, a human hunter with a radically different perspective on being a vampire than Edward as well as Bromley's relationship with his daughter, who ran away and insisted on remaining human. Bold these attempts are, but they're counter-productive to the film's main science-fiction thread.

Eventually as "Daybreakers" continues (especially in the third act) and its primary objective of entertainment becomes gorily evident, it becomes less compelling and more generally amusing. That's when the Willem Dafoe one-liners such as "we're the guys with the crossbows" remind you that no matter how creative the set-up, the punchline of every vampire gore flick is still the same.

Visit my site at http://moviemusereviews.com A darkly stylish horror film. In 2019, vampires rule, less than 5% of the human population remains (viz. a third of a billion people), and vampires are starving. Doctor Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke), vampire and hematologist, is desperately searching for a blood substitute, made particularly imperative because vampires deprived of human blood are devolving into "subsiders," bloodthirsty bat-like creatures who will feed on anything—human, vampire, or even themselves. Edward, who refuses to drink human blood, begins to make the transformation into a subsider. When he runs into a small group of humans led by Audrey Bennett (Claudia Karvan) and is introduced to Lionel "Elvis" Cormac (Willem Dafoe), an ex-vampire who has cured himself, Edward attempts the cure thinking that he can offer it to other vampires. Unfortunately, some vampires, such as Charles Bromley (Sam Neill), owner of Marks Blood Harvesting Pharmaceutical Company, don't share his vision. Daybreakers is based on an original screenplay by Australian brothers/directors Michael and Peter Spierig. This movie follows the traditional vampire attributes including vampire fangs, no reflection in mirrors, extreme photosensitivity to UV light, different looking eyes, a wooden stake to the heart and beheading to be killed, pale skin, low body temperature, immortality, and no heartbeat. In response to some of these non-human traits many cities have developed an elaborate system of underground walkways called "subwalks" allowing vampires to move about in the daylight. Also school, work, and other standard daytime businesses and activities now occur at night; public service announcements alert people of the approaching daylight; and cars may be modified to include, or be purchased with, blacked out windows and cameras allowing for daytime travel. Humans are also captured and kept restrained and unconscious by various companies who in turn sell their extracted blood for food. Due to critical shortages, much of the blood is mixed in limited amounts with other substances such as coffee. This suggests that while the vampires need blood to survive, they may take some nourishment or simply still enjoy the taste from normal food and beverages. The movie begins ten years after most of the population have already become vampires so the source of the disease is not a main plot point or even fully addressed. However a news story shown in passing at the beginning of the movie had the title/headline: "How a Single Bat Started It All." This suggests that the disease initially was one of an animal origin but quickly spread alongside vampires who were biting humans for sustenance. We also see large bats flying about during the daytime several times throughout the movie which is certainly out of the norm. This is a sign that the disease remains in bats and has affected them in various ways as well; such as larger size, more aggressive behavior, etc. As far as how it was possible that most people became vampires, the disease must have occurred in such a rapid pace that the military and medical communities were unable to contain it. It is mentioned that as humans became the minority they were offered the choice to convert, but those who refused to do so were forced into hiding. It requires being subjected to sunlight for a short period of time. In Elvis' case, he was ejected from a car, tossed through the sunlight, and landed in the water. The short exposure, coupled with the rapid cooling, apparently cured Elvis of his vampirism. In Edward's case, he stands in a wine fermentation tank and is exposed to sunlight while wearing robes soaked in water. Later in the movie, it's discovered that feeding on a former vampire is also a cure for vampirism. Having discovered that feeding on a former vampire is another cure for vampirism, Edward gives himself up to Charles...with a plan. He goads Charles into turning him back into a vampire. When Charles drinks Ed's blood, he is turned back into human but not before he summons the vampire patrol. Before the patrol arrive, Ed ties Charles to a chair and seats him in the elevator. When the patrol arrives, out of desperate hunger, they leap on Charles and start feeding. Meanwhile, Ed rescues Audrey, and they rejoin Elvis and Ed's brother Frankie (Michael Dorman). Before they can get away, however, they are surrounded by a large vampire patrol. Frankie orders Ed to run, while he stays behind and allows the vampires to feed on him. When those vampires turn human, more vampires move in to feed on them, until only humans are left. Suddenly, Chris (Vince Colosimo) appears and machine guns all the remaining humans. "There can't be a cure," he tells Ed. Before Chris can kill Ed, however, Elvis shoots a crossbow through his heart, and Chris explodes. In the final scene, Elvis, Ed, and Audrey speed off in Elvis' car. In a voiceover, Ed says, "We have a cure. We can change you back. It's not too late." a5c7b9f00b
