A mouthy and feisty taxicab driver has hot tips for a green and inept cop set on solving a string of New York City bank robberies committed by a quartet of female Brazilian bank robbers.
Belle Williams is a speed demon. Flying through the streets of New York in her tricked-out taxi, she's earned a rep as New York's fastest cabbie. But driving a hack is only a pit stop for her real dream: Belle wants to be a race car champion. And she's well on her way--until she's derailed by overeager cop Andy Washburn, whose undercover skills are matched only by his total ineptitude behind the wheel. Washburn, whose lack of vehicular skills has landed him in the precinct doghouse, is hot on the heels of a gang of beautiful Brazilian bank robbers, led by Vanessa, their cold, calculating--and leggy--leader. To nab the evasive crooks, drivers license-less Washburn convinces Belle to team up with him to pursue Vanessa and crew. Belle has carte blanche to drive at any speed and break any law. The car-less cop and speed-demon cabbie--New York's unlikeliest partners-- begin a high-speed game of cat and mouse with the robbers. That is, if Belle and Washburn don't end up killing each other first.
And it's not a bad thing either. The comedy in here beats our Fast and the Furious by the 1st intentional joke. Seriously, how can a movie featuring Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah with a clumsy, think-too-hard cop and a hard driving taxicab not be funny. It's damn near to the point of being brilliant.
The action in this film is pretty damn good as well. Some people may argue that it isn't up to Fast and the Furious stats but I beg to differ. Fast and the Furious was a pretty good movie but the stunts weren't all that great and original. When watching this film I felt as if I was on the edge of my seat every time another car stunt was coming up. Especially during the last car scene including that rat trap. Plus that car transformation looked really good as well.
Admittingly, the acting was pretty mediocre. It wasn't bad or anything but it didn't really make me say "Damn, they know how to act!" But really, how often does a viewer say that during a comedy, the biggest thing we look for is the jokes, something this movie definitely delivers.
Worth a watch!
Going in to the theater expecting this movie to be quite bad, I was pleasantly surprised. The movie was not all that bad, but it did suffer from the same problem as many other comedies in recent years... the commercials and trailers for the film give away too many of the jokes, which detracts from the humor that is derived from it.
If you are going to see this movie, you are not going in expecting tons of logic or real situations, so I am not even going to analyze the fact that the Jimmy Fallon character would have never been a cop as long as he was and that no human being on the face of the planet with a double digit IQ could possibly be as terrible a driver as Fallon's character appears to be. Mentally challenged chimps could be trained to drive better than Fallon.
Queen Latifah plays pretty much the same character as she did in Bringing Down The House, but she does do it well. Jimmy Fallon plays Washburn, a "slow" police officer who does not know how to pull out of a parking spot. Added to the mix are Jennifer Esposito, who plays his beautiful Lt. (boss) and ex-girlfriend, Gisele Bundchen and three other absolutely stunning bank-robbers who speak virtually no English and do not do too much as far as acting foes, but wow did they look delicious.
There were some pretty good car chases and enough action to hold your attention, while the jokes were hit or miss. There is nothing particularly memorable about this movie, but it was enjoyable. I would recommend a matinée to someone who wants to see a moderately funny action/comedy that will entertain you.
