In this latest POWER RANGERS our five hero teens learn that their small town of Angel Grove - as well as the entire world - is on the verge of being completely destroyed by an alien threat and soon discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they must overcome their personal 'real-life issues' and somehow join forces to save us all. A group of high-school students, who are infused with unique superpowers, harness their abilities in order to save the world. I grew up watching Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers! Ever since the several "movie versions", I was waiting for this reboot as a movie from the Original 1993 TV Series. If I remembered correctly, this reboot was even "slightly" delayed. This review contains spoilers, kindly continue at your own discretion.

---Pros:

I appreciated the portrayal of ethnicity (as many as possible), gender, (and even included orientation in the essence of the characters).

Starring Dacre Montgomery as Jason/Red, Naomi Scott as Kimberly/Pink, Becky G. as Trini/Yellow, RJ Cyler as Billy/Blue, and Ludi Lin as Zack/Black. From one end of the world to the other, covering several different continents.

I most enjoyed is Naomi Scott. Even as Pink, I felt like she played "the backbone" of the team especially during the handling of the Zords. Despite as much as having some cultural diversity, with the actors and actresses representing, the attempt to portray "physique" was probably too tough when comparing to what I remember from the Original 1993-96 TV Series.

The next favorite of all the characters, is Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).

What I mean by "physique" is not just trying to match "body type" to be just like the Original 1993 series. Over the course of training, we can see that Kimberly (Naomi Scott) showed more "artistry" and "put effort in training" from her "cool tough shoulder-to-headshot" which I really liked. I think it is due to Kimberly, bringing out her gymnastic background to show signs of physique or an all-around athlete. And even Trini was the next quick learner even though she was the one to show her speed in climbing from the side effects (a reference to Sabretooth), and then Kimberly caught up and even beat Zack to the top. Most likely intentional that the ladies were presented to be better than the guys (yet to see their stories for physique), which gets my thumbs up!

This is not a con of the movie but the ability to do that "huge leap" was a little bit awkward but a reference to "Superman/Hulk/Spiderman/etc"? I must say though, portraying the two ladies (both Trini and Kimberly) to be awesome at their landing. I laughed at the three guys who had their "trouble" with their "leap".

I like how though that "the battle phases" were short sticking true that good vs evil, it is always "practically easy for the good" to win. However, as far as "origins" or "starting from fresh", I think the battle phases could be longer or put more difficulty. We cannot forget about cameos! Amy Jo Johnson (Kimberly/Pink) and Jason David Frank (Tommy/Green/White, or later Red and "Professor" at one point in each respective TV series).

On the other side, Elizabeth Banks as Rita, indeed quite marvelous. Of course, her tag line "Make My Monster Grow" was included in an okay fashion but I guess the original was just an exaggeration and "perhaps the final decision" was just to go with "a literal aspect?"

---Cons:

I feel like the cons in any review should first be reviewed based on the limitations of movie length. By that, movies have been gradually reduced in duration, now almost all of them vary between 1 hour 20 minutes and 2 hour 20 minutes, or otherwise taken to "Part 2" rather than "sequel".

Before I really go "in somewhat order of occurrence", I guess they tried to do it like you know "when after several episodes you don't really need to see the entire Megazord transformation", this 2017 reboot did that for the "Go Go Power Rangers..." song. I was actually very happy that they brought it in but then decided to use "a technique in TV Series" rather than playing the entire thing out and jump "almost straight into action" which is another film technique. Still, I would have preferred to have heard the entirety of the song, since they obviously took out the "cheesy Morphin'" with the "Morphers" or "some sort of hand-held equipment to morph". Another very notable downfall was "using techniques" to save a life. I think I don't have to say much more about that. This is before going back to HQ.

What I felt was "the meeting of characters was too rushed at the "Saturday detention". Detention, I believe it is a reference to "The Breakfast Club" (1985), by all means not even close, I found "The Slap", extremely funny, clearly girly for an outstanding quarterback (QB).

I understand that each character was showcased in a rather stereotypical manner from the beginning, I still think we can have more character focus.

Perhaps, kept for sequels to tie in "friendship" or "history of connection" for future characters who will become Rangers or "fit for being a Ranger because they were, for example, training partners or like a father's friend's son or like someone who long disappeared or that they left behind after "moving".

Back to the battle phases, perhaps length-limiting though unsure, "the discovery of combining into the Megazord" was "way too rushed" just as they are about to lose. And then that "backdrop suplex?", not a "special move" at all but simply from "training", as "the surprise factor" over an opponent now wielding a long-reach weapon.

Anyway, for better or worse, all the "cheesy" stuff made it "rather adolescent" resulting to a "degrading effect" in terms of "what is known with a reboot". From "The Slap at Detention", to "Trini's water bottle", to at the very end where Rita exclaimed "How?!" was extra comical, bringing back the exaggeration lost in "Make My Monster Grow", perhaps "The Second Slap" turned out to reference "why Rita and Gang were to be at the Moon Palace"?

I think it is good to stop here, to avoid seeming as though I am a 110%- perfect writer or director. I hope some of you may find the above long- windedness "up to standard". Alright, the 2017 Power Rangers movie that half the internet was waiting for, a reboot that is based on the first season(s) of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. After seeing the first trailer I knew that I needed to watch this movie. While friends kept saying that I shouldn't get my expectations high up. After seeing the first trailer and the first pictures of the suits, I felt it was going to be more serious than the series. Nice upgrade of the suits, while I thought that they could've made the helmets more recognizable.

Anyway; seeing the movie gave me a satisfied feeling. The "stereotypes" were still intact (high school football player, cheerleader, nerdy tech guy, the daredevil etc), the diversity of ethnic backgrounds was still there like in most of the Power Rangers series. Even what I thought was lacking in the series in general, was put in the movie in a good way. A 2 hour Power Rangers movie sounded good, but I thought that the first half was going a bit too slow. You want to get to know the characters, but it was a little bit too long. The second half was better, with the final 15 minutes being really packed with action.

Unfortunately the movie was pretty much over after that, but I think that a sequel would be in it's place as they can skip the introductions of the main cast and focus on the story. I didn't expect the movie to be on the action level of something like the Avengers and the MCU, but it was good. With a lot of things still not done yet, they can use a potential sequel to answer the things fans still want to see. At least I would go to a sequel of this. The main story of the Power Rangers compared to the MMPR series is pretty much in tact, the upgraded setting did pretty well, but there is room for improvement for everything. To be fair, it could've been worse. I would've rated it 6,5 but since we round the ratings, it gets a 7 from me. Most movies like Power Rangers get the first-half Y.A. character stuff wrong and the second-half smashy-smashy action stuff right. This one does just the reverse. Despite this show being based on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series, there are some substantial differences in characters/plot/storyline/etc. There may be minor spoilers in this section:

-A major difference is that this is a PG-13 film and touches on some mature subject matter and more realistic violence than the original TV-Y7-rated television series.

-In this film, Zordon and Rita are both former Power Rangers back in the Cenozoic era, with Rita having betrayed the team. While Zordon and Rita in the original show have an extensive past and were enemies, there was nothing in the original show that stated either of the two was actually a Power Ranger, although it is worth noting that in the original TV show, Rita, not Zordon, initially had possession of the Green Power Coin.

-In the original TV series, Rita and her henchmen are sealed away and banished into space in a "Space Dumpster." In this film, she is apparently killed by a meteor, but revives in the modern day, possibly because she still had the Green Power Coin in her possession.

-In the original TV series, Rita tricked Zordon into accepting a truce, and used this opportunity to trap him in a time warp, which is why he appears inside of a glass dome. In this film, Alpha 5 sealed Zordon into the spaceship's matrix as a means of keeping him alive.

-While Alpha 5's design has changed, his personality is largely the same. He does, however, have additional means of self-defense, including extendable arms.

-The Command Center where Zordon and Alpha reside was apparently built on Earth outside of Angel Grove. The Command Center in the new film is Zordon and Alpha's old spaceship, trapped and buried under ground after millions of years. However, both Command Centers are located outside of Angel Grove proper.

-The new Zordon does not immediately embrace/accept the Ranger team, and is highly critical, unlike his television counterpart.

-In the new film, the Rangers apparently do not have the ability to teleport, like they did on the original TV series.

-In the original TV series, the Rangers had to morph to gain their powers/strength. In this film, they gain superhuman strength just by possessing the Power Coins. Additionally, the team has to "come together" as a collective team before they can morph in the new film, while they are able to do so immediately upon desiring to do so in the original show.

-The Angel Grove of the original television series was more of a "California Valley" style town, whereas it has an economy based around fishing in the new film. The design of the town in the new film reflects this.

-In the original TV series, Jason (Red Ranger) is a kind-hearted martial artist, and seamlessly becomes the leader of the team, rarely conflicting with his teammates/subordinates (though based on some reactions of the school principal, it's possible he was a delinquent at one point). The Jason of the film is much more reckless and gets in trouble for pranks he played in school, having to attend detention. This Jason is much more conflicted and reckless than his television counterpart, and is doubted as a leader initially.

-The Kimberly (Pink Ranger) on the original show is a "Valley Girl" type, skilled in gymnastics and music. The one in the film is a more flawed character, and feels like something of a mash-up between a "popular girl" and "mean girl" stereotype. This version of the character is not above doing things that are less than ethical early in the film, which alienates her from her former friends.

-On the original show, Zach (Black Ranger) was African-American, and had invented a fusion of martial arts and dance. In the film, he is of Asian descent, and is something of a delinquent, acting out and regularly not attending school, this partially being due to him having an ailing mother. Ironically, this version of Zach, at least in terms of physical appearance, more resembles Adam Park from the TV series, the second Black Ranger (and Zach's replacement).

-The Billy (Blue Ranger) on the original show was a Caucasian and somewhat of a "nerd" stereotype, who, while a victim of bullying at times, invented things to help the Power Ranger team. Although the character was changed to African-American for the new film, the new version of Billy probably more closely resembles the original version of the character personality-wise than any of the other new Rangers from the film, although the new version's personality is somewhat different since he has autism.

-The Trini (Yellow Ranger) in the original film was both intelligent academically and a skilled martial artist. The version in the new film is of Hispanic/Latina descent and more of a delinquent; it is implied that she may be lesbian/bisexual, although this is not really explored in the film. Her parents clearly see her as a "weird" one due to some of her habits/behavior.

-Rita in the original show had henchmen, including Squat, Baboo, Finster, Goldar, and Scorpina. None of these henchmen appear in the new film, other than Goldar, who is reimagined as a mindless golden giant.

-In the original TV show, the five Ranger forms/Zords have names: Mastodon: Black Ranger. Pterodactyl: Pink Ranger. Triceratops: Blue Ranger. Sabertooth Tiger: Yellow Ranger. Tyrannosaurus: Red Ranger. None of the Ranger forms/Zords are named in the new film, although Billy coins use the term "Megazord" himself to refer to the combination of the Zords that fights Goldar.

-The original TV show's Megazord had all five Rangers in a joint cockpit, as well as a separate "Tank" mode before shifting to the "Robot" mode. The new version, apparently, only has the "Robot" mode, and each Ranger remains in his/her individual Zord on the united form, rather than in a collective cockpit.

-The TV show had many regular characters that do not appear in the new movie, namely Ernie at the Juice Bar, bullies Bulk and Skull, schoolteacher Ms. Appleby, and school principal Mr. Kaplan. The only teacher regularly seen in the film is the one monitoring detention, and he does not seem to be based on any previously existing character. a5c7b9f00b
