In 709 AD, in the Iron Age, a spacecraft crashes in the Viking kingdom of Herot, Norway, and the pilot Kainan survives. He turns the beacon on; learns the language and culture of the planet using a machine; and finds that the predator, Moorwen, that he was transporting, had escaped. While chasing the alien monster, he finds a village completely destroyed and is arrested by the warrior Wulfric, believing that he killed the locals - Kainan is brought to Herot as a prisoner.
During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan, a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry.
Essentially this is a high-concept sci-fi flick with a simple premise: it's PREDATOR, done in Viking times. Having an intense love of both Vikings and rampaging alien monsters, I hoped I'd be in for a treat with this movie. It turns out to be an entertaining if not remarkable vehicle that goes through the motions in a calm, assured way without ever offering much in the way of novelty.
The main problem is the script, which never seems to tackle some of the more interesting challenges the concept offers (such as the parallels with Beowulf or the stuff with the warring tribes). It's strictly by-the-numbers, with a clichéd view of the Viking age and art design that at all times is 'borrowed' from the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Realism/historical accuracy doesn't seem to be a high priority, either, with characters sporting such distinctly un-Viking names as Wulfric (Anglo-Saxon), and (God help me) Boromir.
Saying that, the monster design is strong, and the special effects are often dazzlingly spectacular. Another plus is the cast, which is better than you might expect for a traditional B-movie such as this. Jim Caviezel (THE PASSION OF THE Christ) is a strong silent type as the alien hero, John Hurt performs well as a 'crinkly old elder', Ron Perlman is unrecognisable as a frightening warrior-chief, Jack Huston is charming as a youthful leader, and Sophia Myles is lovely as, well, the love interest.
Altogether I found the film enjoyable if not profound, and if it pales in comparison to the classic monster movies of yesterday, it feels a lot better & more interesting than much similar fare (such as THE RELIC).
Maybe its only my idea, but couldn't the movie be about the Ancient people, that went to the stars (Hyperborea, Atlantis and similar myths). Wouldn't that explain the knowledge of Icelandic language he speaks, and the later learned from computer Norse language and customs? The movie can be much deeper than just Alien meets Beowulf. I could be wrong, and never read about it anywhere, but is there any other explanation about spoken language at start of the movie, and later in the movie when he is boarding the space ship, you can hear computer speaking in old Icelandic language. OK, aliens look like us, but the same language, so conclusion is that they are from Earth, some island from the north as he says in the movie.
If only Outlander was as fun as the premise makes it sound on paper.
Outlander was first conceived by director Howard McCain as similar, but not based on, the classic Old English epic poem Beowulf but with Viking overtones. When McCain later joined with Hollywood screenwriter Dirk Blackman to produce the screenplay, Blackman added science fiction elements to the story by changing the main characters into aliens. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, principal actor Jim Caviezel described Outlander as "kind of like Braveheart (1995) (1995) and Highlander (1986) (1986) combined." The movie states that the story takes place in 709 A.D. Norway, although it actually was shot around Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Laborador in Canada. The language he speaks at the start is Old Norse, the precurser from which modern Scandinavian languages such as Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish originated. The actors were coached in Old Norse/Icelandic by an Icelandic professor. Yes. The Department of English at McMaster University, (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) has placed the text to Beowulf online here.
