Retired archaeology professor Holden leads an private expedition in turbulent Egypt's desert with his daughter Nora,cameraman Fitzie and video producer Sunni, which discovers a unique buried, three-sides pyramid. Initially they only send in engineer Zahir's state of the art robot and prepare to leave Egypt, but it gets lost and they get heavily-armed corporal Shahid to cover for them to retrieve it 'two hours max'. However they soon get lost, stumble upon traps, cause a collapse and fear to be utterly stuck, falling down a thirty meters shaft, into an atypical maze with confusing hieroglyphs. Mounting fear turns into justified despair overshadowing scientific curiosity as they find themselves watched, next attacked by voracious, cannibalistic critters between rats and cats, and next a figure which resembles the god of last judgment Anubis. An archaeological team attempts to unlock the secrets of a lost pyramid only to find themselves hunted by an insidious creature. I went to see this film on the promise that it would be a 'spine chilling horror' and it started with promise. It's a rather claustrophobic watch with their journey in to the pyramids but given the cast (2 of which are more known for their comic exploits) I was willing it to surprise me - it didn't. The thing which is attacking them appears in part quite early on, leaving the main (a heart removing huge cat like anubis) o appear just before the end. The special effects leave much to be desired and the entire feel of the production is cheap and not well thought out. As with many 'horror' movies these days it felt like a piece of two halves; the first with potential to deliver and the second almost as if they just gave up and resigned themselves to producing a laughable and not remotely scary watch. Another huge disappointment. First, Ashley Hinshaw needs more acting lessons, and a cheeseburger. I kid you not, she delivered lines bending forward at the waist gesturing with her hands, making every 6th grade acting student sad. Second, there are MANY compelling parts, despite her bad acting: 1. travel through dark pyramid, often through small spaces, 2. quick moving "alien" type nasty cats, 3. WONDERFUL sand suffocation scene, 4. ACTUAL Anubis. THEN, the ending. Ashley (don't know her name in the movie - her acting wasn't good enough to seem like an actual character) just stabbed this Egyptian god, and stuck a flare in its face, and got away. Seems like an entity that had survived for 6-8 thousand years may be a little more hardy. She just gets to light, and passes out? Then Anubis just eats some random boy? And does what? So disappointing. It's a found footage movie that feels instantly dated, even with its supposed political undertones. It's creaky, laborious, and not, in the least bit, scary. a5c7b9f00b
