Groups of people - colonies - are forced underground due to another ice age. Colony 7 goes to check on Colony 5, which they lost contact with. When they get there they find that the colony has fallen and there is a whole new enemy that they have to face on their way back.
Forced underground by the next ice age, a struggling outpost of survivors must fight to preserve humanity against a threat even more savage than nature.
This movie had a good premise and a strong cast. Ultimately however I feel a lack of attention to detail and story telling let the movie down and moving it into B-movie category. Watching The Colony I was reminded quite a bit of Ghosts Of Mars - which if you haven't seen please watch instead of this. Despite strong characters in the roles such as Fishburn and Paxton - even the lead character Zergers was a good convincing lead - I found some plot elements ridiculously predictable as well as some ensuing problems becoming unintelligent, clichéd and illogical. The survivors struggling in their confined space and paranoia and the drama of this position ultimately fell to a feeble plot device. Place brain in neutral this wasn't as dramatic as hoped.
Jeff Renfroe directs this tale of horror in a cold, futuristic 2045. Extreme climate change and global warming has moved surviving humans underground into bunkers. Primarily two challenges, controlling disease and manufacturing sustaining foodstuff. A bunker, Colony 7, is led by Briggs (Laurence Fishburne) and Mason (Bill Paxton) ; both are at odds with rules of survival. They receive a distress signal from their closest neighbor, Colony 5; when they get there the bunker is covered in blood. When Briggs and Mason gather the expedition to return to Colony 7, they must out run a clan of feral, degenerate men. For sure, count on some red snow and disturbing situations.
The pace of action is a bit slow; but THE COLONY does have its moments. Civilization and morality is wiped away. There will be disparate measures for disparate people to survive.
The cast also includes: Charlotte Sullivan, John Tench, Lucius Hoyos, Kevin Zegers, Kimberly-Sue Murray, Atticus Mitchell and Dru Viergever.
There are a few nice scares in The Colony, and the female lead, Rookie Blue's Charlotte Sullivan, looks really, really cute in blond dreadlocks. But she can't save the movie, nor can her impressive costars, Bill Paxton, Kevin Zegers, and Laurence Fishburne.
