In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.
In an alternative Victorian Age Gotham City, Batman begins his war on crime while he investigates a new series of murders by Jack the Ripper.
I love the environment.
but when batman is a superhero character, he must be can fight better with a human villains, i expected more than this.
in this movie batman is like a normal school boxing fighter.
I'd heard good things about Gotham by Gaslight, but I was concerned. You see I really don't like all these alternate universes and timelines, I'm old school and like consistency.
This is set in a Victorian Gotham (Which immediatly is baffling) where Batman roams the streets defending the city he loves. Trouble is a killer is stalking the dark alleys killing prostitutes and his name is Jack the Ripper.
This is dark and gritty, the way it really had to be. It also has elements of a "whodoneit" as you try to figure out who Jacks true identity is.
Along the way we see plenty of familiar faces such as Poison Ivy, Cat Woman, Harvey Dent, Bullock and Commisioner Gordon.
They truly rewrite the script, re-inventing everyone from the ground up and for me that simply doesn't sit right.
The big reveal at the end was very satisfying and well done but I just couldn't get over my issues with these alternate universe things. For those who can, you might find this to be a very interesting little movie.

Some originally speculated that "Batman: Gotham by Gaslight" would be merged with its sequel story "Master of the Future." However, it seems that the creative team at DC Animation has instead chosen to expand upon the original story with new scenes, characters and plot elements. Added characters include Selina Kyle; (Mrs.) Barbara Gordon; Harvey Bullock; Jason Todd; Hugo Strange; and Pamela Isley (as Ivy the Plant Lady). Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, originally published in 1989, is considered to be DC Comics' first Elseworlds story.
