In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to a moon, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture. On the lush alien world of Pandora live the Na'vi, beings who appear primitive but are highly evolved. Because the planet's environment is poisonous, human/Na'vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully, a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and falls in love with a Na'vi woman. As a bond with her grows, he is drawn into a battle for the survival of her world. Finally, after 12 years of waiting James Cameron is back. When i saw the trailer of this movie i knew this is going to be one of the best films ever made.

When his brother is killed in a battle, Semi-paralyzed Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) takes his brothers place in a project, where his brother took part of, and goes to the moon Pandora where he has to infiltrate with help of a specially cloned Na'Vi avatar that he can control with his mind and when Jake enters the world of Pandora as a avatar he comes in touch with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) which since then has a special bond with. With help of Dr Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and Norm Spellman (Joel Moore) he tries to improve the understanding between humans and the Na'Vi people, but Colonel Miles Quarich (Stephen Lang) sees this as a great opportunity to gain some information about the Na'Vi people and to take over their rich land.

Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang and Michelle Rodriguez all did great solid jobs but the real stand-out is Zoe Saldana as Neytiri. I haven't seen a lot of her movies but in Avatar she was just great. The only thing i had problem with avatar is the story, which was a little bit clichéd and at some time predictable.

Avatar is a great adventure and is a Must-See for every movie fan around the world. I still can not believe that James Cameron made this movie in the past 12 years. Almost everything in this movie is great, actors, special effects , the eye to detail. i haven't seen a lot of high praised films by critics (Brothers, Inglorious Basterds, Precious) but for me Avatar is the Best film of 2009. I just saw Avatar tonight. I had originally not been bothered to see it but when I saw it had a rating here of 8.6/10, I decided it was probably worth a shot.

In summary for those who haven't seen it, save yourself £12 (or whatever it costs at your local cinema) and 3 hours of your life and don't see it.

Now, don't get me wrong. The use of 3d graphics was exceptional and certainly revolutionary. However, the story (which I will cover more in the next paragraph) was *yawn* and as a result, the film would have been MUCH more enjoyable if it had run for 100 minutes, which it could easily have been.

The best comparison I can think of on the top of my head is that Avatar is to Cinema what Wii Sports was to computer games. When Wii Sports was first released, everyone was saying 'oh my! Its awesome! The person moves with you due to the sensor etc'. 3 months later, however, once the initial impact had faded, you had some really simple and rubbish games (compared to what had since been released to the market). I saw someone mention in the forums for this film that he wonders what opinion will be of this film in 10 years. I'd say that it will always have a special place in cinema as the first fully 3d film but it will never be remembered as a good film from any other aspect.

Without going into details of the actual story, it is just a bland summary of the development of Western Society. The undertones of the film is clearly the 'cowboys and Indians' story combined with the Gulf War and other anti-capitalist agendas.

I am told that people who saw Avatar were depressed afterwards due to what happens to the Na'vi (the indigenous race being plundered in the film). If you are one such person from a 'Western Country', then maybe it is time you saw past the superficial wonders of western society, such as this film and actually put your time to good use doing something to make mankind a better place. The question lingers as the movie comes to its triumphant body-swapping close: Is this a pro-environment parable or a prophecy of virtual realities yet to come? Cameron's new world may very well be a verdant Matrix. First of all there's the well-known record-breaking theatrical version that runs approximately 155 minutes and is available on Blu-ray/DVD. During its theatrical run Cameron announced that he'd planned to release extended versions of his movie, as well.

The first extended cut is the so-called Special Edition of the movie that had a theatrical release a couple months after the original run. There are one or two extended scenes which deepen existing portions of the plot on an emotional level and some completely new scenes. Those, however, only deepen the parts already known, but do not offer the viewer new possibilities of consideration or interpretation of the actual story. Among the highlights of the new scenes is the visit to a deserted Na'vi school by Grace, Norm and Jake. The other scenes are often simply contextual extensions. They include, among other things, scenes of Jake and Neytiri fusing their tendril features during their extra-terrestrial intercourse, the Na'vi and Jake hunting and burning the humans' excavating machines and Dr. Augustine's scientific explanation for the floating mountains. This new Special Edition runs approximately 8 minutes longer than the original theatrical version.

Furthermore there's the Extended Edition. The Extended Edition can be seen as a kind of bonus version. It is based upon the Special Edition and is nearly completely identical to it—except for the opening of the film. Initially, "Avatar" was to start on Earth. In the end, Cameron removed these scenes, because they would delay the plot. Only small parts of it were shown during Jake Sully's opening monologue. Cameron clearly prefers the classical start of the film aboard the spacecraft. However, the fans' disappointment with the missing scenes on Earth was so profound that Cameron decided to insert them in this extended edition. Thus, it must rather be viewed as some kind of bonus for fans. This Extended Edition runs approximately 7 minutes longer than the Special Edition and 15 minutes longer than the theatrical version and can be found in the Extended Collector's Edition. a5c7b9f00b
