The President of the United States is in Salamanca, Spain, about to address the city in a public square. We see a plain-clothes cop, his girlfriend with another man, a mother and child, an American tourist with a video camera, and a Secret Service agent newly returned from medical leave. Shots ring out and the President falls; a few minutes later, we hear a distant explosion, then a bomb goes off in the square. Those minutes are retold, several times, emphasizing different characters' actions. Gradually, we discover who's behind the plot. Is the Secret Service one step ahead, or have the President's adversaries thought of everything?
The attempted assassination of the American President is told and re-told from several different perspectives.
This was a pretty good movie. The first scene, from Sigourney Weaver's control room view, was absolutely incredible. Unfortunately there were many problems. Maybe I've seen too many movies, but as soon as Matthew Fox separated himself and we only heard him over the radio I immediately guessed that he would be a turncoat--which is close to blasphemy, as a Secret Service agent assigned to the Presidential detail would NEVER DO THIS! Anyone who would even consider allowing such a thing to happen (let alone causing it) would not get the security clearance to be in the Service in the first place--forget the POTUS assignment! Other people have pointed out the convenient placement of characters like the little girl's mom just happening to be right across the street at the and. Dennis Quaid was outstanding. He has gotten much better with age and has started making very good role choices. Forest Whitaker is a good actor, but you wouldn't know it from watching this. All he did the whole movie was wander around looking lost. The constant rewinding was a bit of a nuisance, especially the first time when I was sitting there shocked by the reporter's death and the tragic bombing. A more traditional transition would have been less jarring and more appropriate. Still worth watching, but I'm surprised Secret Service people didn't raise a fury.
I really love Forest Whitaker in this role! He really makes you believe that this is his real personality (and maybe it is). He was so hard to watch as Idi Amin. Not because of his acting ability (I believe him to be one of the best) but because Idi Amin committed such horrors. Vantage Point makes you remember what a great guy Forrest Whitaker can be. Such a great acting ability to be able to play both roles and do it convincingly.
Great action role for Dennis Quaid! I thought he filled out his character perfectly! I have always liked Dennis Quaid but thought he was a "same old, same old" actor. This performance was by far his best ever. I hope he keeps it up and lands some more roles like this one.
Sigourney Weaver was great too I wish she was more in the story. Her small part as a down-to-business news gal was a good role for her.
Ayelet Zurer I had never heard of until I watched this movie and thought her character was very convincing. I found out she's one of the most acclaimed actresses in Israel. VP could be her big leap to the USA. She has a beautiful voice and a charismatic presence on film.
We all see things from a different point of view. This movie takes it apart looks at the incident from everyone's perspective without telling you the end. Every twenty minutes they leave you hanging until the final scene pulling it all together with an ending that makes you want to cry or cheer! I love this movie. It's in my top 15 favorite movies.
Although it was held back by the studio for about a year, someone apparently came to the inevitable conclusion that no amount of ripening time was going to help this gimmicky and ultimately harebrained movie.
