When a failed nuclear fusion experiment results in an explosion that kills his wife, Dr. Otto Octavius is transformed into Dr. Octopus, a cyborg with deadly metal tentacles. Doc Ock blames Spider-Man for the accident and seeks revenge. Meanwhile, Spidey's alter ego, Peter Parker, faces fading powers and self-doubt. Complicating matters are his best friend's hatred for Spider-Man and his true love's sudden engagement to another man.
Peter Parker's having a rough time. His double life as the super hero Spider-Man is having a devastating impact on his civilian life. Things are so bad he declares that he's quitting and never putting on the suit again. However, his sense of duty forces him to become a hero again when the brilliant scientist Dr. Otto Octavius is transformed in an accident and becomes Dr. Octopus. With four metal tentacles sticking out of his back, he'll prove to be a more than worthy opponent for Spider-Man.
Wow ! What a thrill ride! Far superior to the original in all ways, effects, story, I can't recommend it more highly. Tobey Maguire inhabits Peter Parker more fully and we really feel what it costs him to be Spider-Man. Alfred Molina brings "DOC OCK" to life and then some. We need more of JJJ. All around an improvement on an already great movie series. And what a setup for the next movie, all in all a great night at the movies. Sam Raimi is absolute proof that what is needed to bring "comics" to life is a truly committed director that respects the material and doesn't camp it up. So many great characters from fiction have been ruined by directors that don't understand the material. Are you listening Hollywood? Stop trying to "Punch It Up" rather try reading the material to figure why it is popular in the first place. Then tell that story.
In most recent years the summer months have brought an endless stream of blockbuster drivel. I was beginning to think that the art of making movies was being lost to the insatiable thirst of the production companies desire to bank as much money as possible each season.
Spiderman 2 has restored my faith. It's got everything you come to expect from a blockbuster; it's got action, thrills and spills, a romance, comedy, drama and tragedy. Fortunately it's also got what you don't expect ... It's good !!! The main reason for this is the way all the characters are fleshed out. The good guys have problems and flaws whilst the bad guys are really bad through circumstances rather than through choice. In my opinion this is much better than the original and leaves you looking forward to the next film which again is unusual.
This franchise is still revving up and could be the biggest thing of the naughties. 8/10

"Hold On" by Jet. In theory, the amount of heat and gravitational pull from a star, even one that size, would be enough to pull in and vaporize the water around it. We should have seen a very large column of steam rising out of the river, but it is a detail that was probably over looked or not even considered. Basically, there are three different cuts available throughout the world. First of all, there is the well-known theatrical version¹ that has been altered prior to the British cinema release² by Sony and unfortunately found its way to nearly all PAL DVDs. One headbutt has been replaced with a normal punch. The US DVD is uncut.Then, just in time for the theatrical release of Spider-Man 3 (2007) an Extended Cut³ has been released to the home media market that runs approximately 8 minutes longer than the theatrical version. This extended version features several different kind of new scenes—story extensions, romance, action—but in principle this extended version is only worth for the die-hard fan. And by the way, the European versions of the Extended Cut are still altered in the same way as the theatrical version, thanks to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and Sony. a5c7b9f00b
