Newly paroled ex-con and former U.S. Ranger Cameron Poe finds himself trapped in a prisoner transport plane when the passengers seize control.
Cameron Poe is an Army Ranger who was going to go home to his pregnant wife when he got into a fight with three men. He would kill one of them and the other two ran away with the knife they had and because of that he would be convicted of manslaughter. After eight years he would be paroled. He would be part of a group that's being transferred to another prison and flown in a special plane. While in flight a fight breaks out and two of the most dangerous criminals, Diamond Dog and Cyrus the Virus Grissom, would break out from their restraints and take over the plane. When the plane makes it's first stop Poe and friend who's a diabetic and who wasn't given his shot, and all the syringes were destroyed, try to get off but Grissom wouldn't let them. He then tries to alert the authorities but got away. Now the government is considering shooting the plane down but U.S. Marshall Vince Larkin thinks that it's a little hasty and believes that Poe is an ally. When Grissom leads them on a wild goose chase, Poe alerts them to where they are going.
A real hoot!
Cage is at his best sucking! (He comes complete with King Fu grip and a Southern accent that's about as convincing as Elton John would be playing a non-flambouyant straight man.) Why does Nick keep popping up in films. I would much rather seeing a real bad acting artist like Keanu Reeves than some arrogant prick who the world of Hollywood claims is one of it's best, but in all actuality is more dull than the tip of Sponge.
There's plenty of realistic action. Wait that's another film.
I do think that Buscemi and Malcovich play well with their highly entertaining characters. But the story of this film is Nick Cage's dialogues sounding like a Tennessee Walking Horse chewing on Emu Dung.
This film sucked like newborn baby on his first bottle.
Con Air is a typical action flick which has been elevated by a superior cast of not so typical actors. Nicolas Cage plays Cameron Poe, a military man sent to prison for defending himself, who is on his way home to see his family for the first time in seven years. He boards a plane filled with an assortment of psycho criminals and when they overtake the plane his military programming sets in. He decides to save the day. Malkovich does a wonderful job playing the memorable villain Cyrus "The Virus". Buscemi, John Cusack and Ving Rhames all support this film with their talent. This movie is entertaining. The only two flaws I can see is Cage's inconsistent southern accent and the fact that anyone who knows Vegas has to wonder how they hit the guitar on the Hard Rock cafe (which isn't really that far off the ground) and ended up crashing by the Fremont Street Experience??? They would have taken out half the casinos on the strip! But who cares, its the movies!!
Mega-budget action extravaganzas don't get much sillier than this.
During the fight, Billy-Joe pulls a switch-blade on Cameron. Cameron responds by striking Billy-Joe in the nose, causing him to die from blunt-force trauma to the head. When Billy-Joe's friends flee the scene, one of them grabs the switch-blade off the ground. Therefore making a self-defence case difficult to prove. As the only witness Cameron had was his wife Trisha and even she ran off to get Dale the bartender before Billy-Joe pulled the knife, therefore she didn't witness what happened.
During his trial, Cameron refused to plead guilty. However, his lawyer gives him poor advice, stating that he risked getting 10 years if the case went to trial and he lost. But by admitting to it, he'd only get 4 years and serve maybe a year for good behaviour. For whatever reason, this wasn't a plea deal, but lawyer's advice. So when he plead guilty, the judge seemingly decided to make an example out of Cameron, believing that Cameron, being a former Army Ranger didn't think the normal rules of society applied to him and that he is trained to respond with deadly force, therefore making him a danger to society and therefore gave him a sentence of 7-10 years. a5c7b9f00b
