Joe Hallenbeck is a burned-out detective. Jimmy Dix is an ex-LA Stallions player. Hallenbeck was hired to protect a stripper named Cory. Dix is Cory's boyfriend. When Cory is executed during a drive-by shooting, both Hallenbeck and Dix try to get to the bottom of the case. A down and out cynical detective teams up with a down and out ex-quarterback to try and solve a murder case involving a pro football team and a politician. The Last Boy Scout is a definite career high for both director Tony Scott and screenwriter Shane Black, and maybe even Bruce Willis. The classic status of Die Hard has been somewhat diminished by its okay but uninspired sequels. This however, is a real one-off, a very funny action thriller with some excellent set pieces. What makes this truly great though is the dialogue, and some cracking performances. Bruce Willis is absolutely perfect for this kind of role and he has a ball. He is well matched by Damon Wayans as his reluctant buddy, who is also very funny despite having to wear some really bad clothes. The villians are also brilliant, and lots of other characters like the corrupt senator Baynard, the alley thug (in a priceless scene) and the doomed henchman Chet are quality. There's a lot, maybe even too much swearing, but like other genre classic Midnight Run, the profanity adds an extra dimension of humour. The Last Boy Scout is producer Joel Silver's most underrated film and is a minor classic in its own right. Better than any of the Lethal Weapon films. Bruce Willis stars as Joe Hallenberg a private eye who teams up with a down and out football player Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayons) to prevent the assassination of a seedy politician in this entertaining actioner which despite the lame plot provides some good moments of both action and comedy. Overall The Last Boy Scout maybe flawed but it's ten times better then Willis' other 1991 fiasco Hudson Hawk. Despite the testosterone-charged violence and jaw-dropping sexism, the tone is one of self-conscious excess - a strategy which constantly undercuts the film's celebration of male bonding conventions. When Joe & Jimmy take the bomb from the security detail's crashed car, they place it on the backseat of their car. Therefore, when the lieutenant opens the trunk of the car at the stadium and takes the case out, it has to be the money - we can only assume that Joe placed it there (offscreen) when he takes it from the car in the swimming pool. Presumably he either also grabs a spare magazine and reloads offscreen or Darien brings an extra box of bullets with her to Jimmy's car.
