When a family is held hostage, former hostage negotiator Jeff Talley arrives at the scene, however, the tables turn on Talley when his own family is kidnapped and Talley must decide which is more important: saving a family he doesn't even know or saving his own family. There wealthy recluse Walter Smith's fortress villa is chose after a silly boasting game as next robbery target by maverick Mars Krupcheck, cocky Dennis Kelly and his dragged-along, basically decent kid brother Kevin. Walter gets shot, but his alarms alert he police and later shut down the compound, while his snooty daughter Jennifer foolishly flirts and smart kid son Tommy manages to hide and contact Talley, who initially planned to lay low. The chief dismisses the blundering FBI, forced by the kidnapping of his own family to go in and retrieve a mysterious secret file for a shady but mighty mastermind bunch. All plans are crosses by surprises, from the panicking amateur fiends, kids and Jeff.
In a small town in California, the chief of police Jeff Talley is facing relationship problems with his teenager daughter. One year later, he was the prime police negotiator in Los Angeles, but after an unsuccessful negotiation, he gave-up his position and decided to move with his family to a calmer life. When three punks invade the house of Walter Smith, a wealthy accountant, and jeopardize his family, holding them hostage, Jeff's family is abducted by powerful criminals to force him to retrieve a DVD with bank accountings' information kept in Walter's office.
"The Hostage" is not a good movie. However, the fact that it's not a good movie doesn't readily smack you in the face right away. The plots and sub-plots make this movie into a confusing mess. And I'm not talking about the "Mission Impossible" kind of confusing. I'm talking about the "Batman Forever" kind of confusing, where you are left wondering why the characters in the movie just don't take a direct and simple approach in solving their problems, instead of making things overly complicated and unrealistic. Throw in shoddy character development, horrible child acting, unresolved story lines, and Bruce Willis' real life coat-tails riding daughter, and you have "The Hostage." This film presents one conflict as the premise of the movie, only to have a larger conflict become the actual overall focus. However, "The Hostage" presents a weak plot that follows up with an underdeveloped sub-plot. After the first half of the film, I was bored with the premise. Then the sub-plot kicked in, and for a few brief seconds, I was entertained. That came to a grinding halt rather quickly.
The entire time the sub-plot was unfolding, I couldn't help but to wonder why it was necessary. It would be like a chicken taking a space shuttle, orbiting the solar system, crashing to the earth, hailing a taxi, driving to an airport, boarding an airplane, and parachuting to the ground. When in reality, all he had to do to get to the other side.......was cross the road.
So, your hard earned $7.00 would be better spent on a six pack of imported beer. Because also like "Batman Forever," you'll probably leave wondering why this film was even made in the first place.
i like Bruce, and his movies would be never too stupid to watch.
So if you are fans of Bruce, i strongly recommend this movie. It has all the most classic factors of a Bruce produced. You must know what i am telling you. Yeah. Inevitably, you will see him shooting people, doing something tough, getting hurt but still OK. You are going to enjoy all you expect from his movie.
But what's more, he did something more this time. He do talking, talking to child, bad young criminals, and bad police. It is a little break-through for him.
And the idea of the plot is also good, though not completely perfect or brilliant, but worthy spending 100 minutes for it. "hostage" has a dual meanings here. But it will be better, if the ending could be more complete. For examples, the boss of those bad polices should come out and get killed by Bruce.
Bruce looks hot and underplays handsomely as always, but Hostage is a steaming pile of siege clichés and screaming unlikelihoods.
