A modern day cop finds herself traveling between different times and different wars.
A Goddess is a female deity with supernatural powers - as defined in the world wide web's Wikipedia. However, with such a strong title featuring a word that means so many things to different people, film director Gabe Rodriguez makes an ambitious film that takes on the universe.
What could've been a clichéd chick-flick evolved throughout the writing and filming process into a deep, thought provoking, time traveling, mystic adventure casting a female duo playing Brooklyn's Bushwick NYPD officers - a modern day spin on strong women taking on a man's job in serving to protect the innocent.
After receiving a neighboring complaint, the police partners make a visit to a gypsy psychic's parlor to warn her about scaring the people with evil spells or bad deeds. In return, the psychic warns one of the officers, Orysia Rozhenko, played by Dina Cataldi, with a threat of trouble that will soon find a friend she has yet to meet.
In a series of time traveling events, Rozhenko, visits past and future lifetimes of two warring soldiers, played by Nate Steinwachs and Casey Bartolucci, that awaken her knowledge for spiritual truth. Realizing how the military serve as a reputation for a different form of law enforcement as she witnesses blood on the battlefield, she discovers that good and evil do exist - which is why she chose to incarnate as a cop in this lifetime. Choosing this profession was for a reason, one that she almost forgot until learning some valuable lessons from the victims that she helped along her journey. The fact that law enforcement is a job that was once entrusted only to men due to its "dominant" characteristics, proves how far we've evolved today. Embracing both her masculine and feminism sides is what makes her whole, a Goddess, who fights for justice between right and wrong.
Spiritual is a word without a clear definition. It covers a wide array of assumptions for different people. There's an abstract element to it but there's also a clear message in the ending when Cataldi's character says, 'Now I remember why I wanted to be a cop. Right and wrong do exist... and heroism exists. People are just a shade of gray.' Initially this might come off as preachy or as if the film were moralizing to the audience, but ultimately I'm really glad that conclusion is there. It grounds the rest of the film.
Ironically, one of the best criticisms I can give is that I wish the film was longer. Goddess of a Time is a timely and poignant embrace of our real situation. And I loved how concepts and actions took on more reality than individuals. Very pragmatic, without being idealistic.
Tired of busting junkies and being 'meter maids,' two Brooklyn-based female cops itch for their next outbreak in the NYPD. Written and directed by Gabe Rodriguez, GODDESS OF TIME shifts from one galvanizing scene to the next. The screenplay pushes Officer Orysia Rozhenko (Dina Cataldi), a Ukrainian hopeful heroine who is thrown into a strenuous time puzzle, to her limits. By her side is rookie partner in crime, Officer Mona Degrassi (Monica K. Ross). The two follow up on a warrant assigned to a psychic shop where Fairuza (Kaki Hunt Kemp) warns the duo of the unknown man named Frank Rollins and his immediate danger.
There is a fine line drawn between Officer Rozhenko's internal problems versus her external problems. GODDESS OF TIME relies heavily on the authenticity of the plot while creating an obvious arc to Rozhenko's character. In a non-linear fashion, Rozhenko is thrown into the past, the present and the future, while simultaneously revolving around Lieutenant Frank Rollins' (Nate Steinwachs) experiences with post war symptoms.
Likewise, the fluentness of the structure depicts the unraveling sense of good and evil that resides in the world. The thin layer of greyness in the evil versus the good serves as a compelling driving force in the story.
Rodriguez has a vision and a tone that is portrayed through an effective screenplay. Not only does it show through action, but also dialogue plays an essential role in the depiction of society and the people that make it up. A primarily female cast adds to the heroism and the stereotype against females in authority, thus creating much more than a female cop story.
