Hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate known as Master Control and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the ultimate blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron to outmaneuver the Master Control Program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game. Hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn is desperate to prove that the hottest video games from ENCOM were stolen from him by a former co-worker, who is now a senior executive there. However, Flynn's efforts are made fruitless by ENCOM's Big Brother, the megalomaniacal Master Control Program. One night, the MCP catches Flynn in an attempted hack and pulls him into the virtual world. Flynn finds that the MCP is making life in the virtual world just as, if not more, miserable as in the real world. Flynn's only hope is to find Tron, a heroic independent system security program, and help him destroy the MCP to bring order to both worlds. How sad this little miracle of a movie has virtually disappeared from people's memories since it debuted almost two decades ago. Maybe I was just a subjective, overly impressionable "yute" when "Tron" opened in 1982,( I was thirteen.) but I don't care. I know it was a major box-office disappointment, most critics reemed it ( only Siskel and Ebert raved about it ), and I admit a noticeable portion of dialouge borders, if not cross over, to "nerdy" or just plain stupid, but I don't care. ( I noticed the occasionaly clunky dialogue even then. "Tron" was a fantastic feast for the eyes AND ears with it's quirky sound effects.( And I'm sure it STILL is with the right entertainment system) It's true sometimes I couldn't figure what was actually happening, or why, but I was so mesmerized... "Tron" really was a groundbreaker. Maybe I AM tainted with nostolgia, I suppose it is a "geek's" flick, but if the studs had more fun, at least "we" had, and deeply appreciated, other people's imagination. I'm actually greatful to this movie for giving me some pleasant memories. What a sad loss. At a friend's urging, we rented the DVD of this and gave it another try. He's always had a soft spot for it. (conversely, I will admit to liking The Black Hole, which he despises) I was impressed with the visual design - setting it inside a computer gave the graphics a kind of "timeless" quality which lets it age better than other early Computer Graphics efforts. However, despite some nice touches (the whole religious element involving programs believing in their "users") what little plot exists is fairly infantile and poorly implemented, and the dialogue is frankly horrible. If you haven't seen it in awhile, it's probably worth renting (*ON DVD* Widescreen only!) for what is one of the most unique design schemes ever put on film, but don't expect much of a movie beneath the gloss. (and look for both Bruce Boxleitner and Peter Jurasik a decade prior to their reunitement on Babylon 5) It's intelligently conceived (on a visual level, at any rate) and largely good fun.
