The Joker has escaped from Arkham and Batman must once again bring him in - once and for all. Unfortunately for the bat, there is something even more sinister than the Joker waiting in the alley for the dark knight detective..
Life isn't fair. The Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum. Bruce Wayne puts on his Batman suit, mask, and cape, and goes in pursuit. He's soon found the Joker and begins a fight to subdue the red-eyed, sneering villain. Then, suddenly, things take a surprising turn: the Joker becomes the least of Batman's worries. New enemies appear: it's as if he's found himself in another set of comic books. Can he hold his own?
Perhaps Joel Schumacher would be willing to take pointers from Sandy Collora on film direction, but I doubt his ego would permit him to even consider it. This 8 minute masterpiece is how the 3rd and 4th "Batman" films should have looked, and more importantly, FELT, had someone with a sense of what the character was all about were in charge. Unfortunately, we were saddled with Mr. Schumacher who is under the impression that silly comic relief; ridiculous gadgets and unnecessary explosions make for a good film. It is my sincerest hope that the powers that be in Hollywood take notice of this little gem and allow Sandy Collora a chance to direct the 5th Batman film before it too is ruined before it even hits the screens.
Well first and foremost I must confess to not really being a big fan of superhero flicks in general; a fact that is veritably reinforced by Hollywood's present fixation with producing huge budget, special effects extravaganzas involving DC and Marvel characters that ultimately comprise about as much substance as the average mosquito's fart.
I must also confess my general ignorance as regards the progression that the aforementioned superheroes have made on the smaller screen to. As an example, I know that there are for instance, a plethora of live action TV and animated shows in which Superman has featured, but ask me to give the specific title of even one and I'll simply pull a blank expression much akin to the sort of glazed, vacuous look that the average Hollywood executive adopts if confronted with the term 'originality'.
Bearing the above in mind, it is little wonder then that I had previously never heard of the short film being reviewed here. In fact I came upon it merely by chance one day, hidden in the trailers section of a completely unrelated DVD.
..But how glad I am that I made this fortuitous discovery!
Simply put, this short film completely blew me away!
It's a very simple affair (as one would fully expect it to be considering such a short running time) but the way in which it has been implemented coupled with the spectacular special effects (which showcase some VERY familiar screen icons!) left me desperately wanting to see more.
Indeed one can only speculate how incredible this would have been as a full length film. As it is and in relation to the previously mentioned plethora of huge bucks/huge hype/minimal quality, big studio superhero output, I'm just incredibly thankful to have had the pleasure to view this little gem which sparkles like a diamond in for what is the most part (i.e. the majority of Hollywood made superhero flicks) a veritable sea of shi- ahem.
As a final note, I find it fascinating to view the sharply dividing opinions on this film from the other reviewers and message board posters on this site. Truly it is evident that fans of any given franchise make up for both the highest of worshippers and conversely the harshest of critics. It is also overtly apparent however that those who have chosen to slate the flick share a number of pellucid traits; namely that the sum total of their composed critiques are based primarily upon empty pernicious cavilling i.e. as not liking the design of the bat suit(!!!), disapproving of the nature of the brief dialogue(!!!) or else objecting to the presence of the Aliens and/or the Predators (despite the fact that Batman has indeed battled both of the said enemies in graphic novels previously). Furthermore there is in the aforementioned individuals the curious commonality of shockingly poor grammatical composition and prose; both said factors which lead me to the conclusion that most of these detractors are likely to be from a younger, more inexperienced audience.
To summarize then, for true Batman connoisseurs and those who are sagacious enough to remember that the said protagonist didn't originally wear a full latex costume(!) this is a superlative envisioning of the said character and is as such, intrinsic viewing.
