After a clumsy operation trying to capture a drug dealer, the N.Y.P.D Detectives Jimmy Monroe and Paul Hodges are suspended for one month by their Captain Romans. Jimmy decides to sell his rare baseball card to pay for his daughter's expensive wedding while his jealous partner believes that his wife is cheating on him with their next-door neighbor. When Jimmy sells his card to a memorabilia store, the place is burgled by two small-time thieves and the detective loses his card. They track down the thieves.
Jimmy's rare baseball card is robbed. Since it's his only hope to pay for his daughter's upcoming wedding, he recruits his cop partner Paul to track down the robber, a memorabilia-obsessed gangster.
Let me start by saying I actually walked out of the theater this movie was so bad! I love Bruce Willis (Tracy Morgan has his moments)and was expecting a lot from this film. The plot was interesting and had a lot of promise to be a very entertaining film. That didn't happen. Tracy Morgan was a complete joke(NOT THE FUNNY KIND). He wasn't funny and really took away from Bruce Willis in a comedy role, which Bruce has done before and done well. Tracys antics came off has just plain annoying and way over the top. I spent half the film just waiting on him to stop talking long enough for Bruce to step up as the true bad *** that he his. Neither ever happened. It didn't help that these two "cops", I use the term loosely, were completely incompetent. They have been partners for 9 years!! Are you kidding me! The writing didn't help sell this partnership either. This should go down as the worst crime fighting duo in history. I actually read where some one compared them to Lethal Weapon. WOW! Not even close! Lets set aside the fact that Mel and Danny actually knew how to be cops but guess what! They were funny too! "COP OUT" is 0-2 for that. If Danny had been that distracted by these ridiculous antics, a lousy cell phone call or a silly teddy bear, It's certain they wouldn't have made it past Lethal Weapon 1... Save your money
This movie is about two policemen that try to solve a case, and they are supposed to be funny, a threadbare theme that we've seen many times, and in this case, the humour is pathetic.
Bruce Willis (what is he doing here, he must be ashamed) has a partnership with Tracy Morgan (there is no chemistry between them), and here we have a problem: Morgan always tries to be funny, but all he can do is to shout or be exaggerated in almost all scenes, or can be even worst when he talks about his feces for minutes (nobody deserves it!!).
The script is weak and forced, the protagonists are ludicrous, and even the music can't help that much.
So, the best thing to do about this movie is forget it and do not lose your precious time with such crap.
Without that heightened racial antipathy-turned-camaraderie, there's not a whole lot to Cop Out besides watching Kevin Smith pretend, with a crudeness that is simply boring, that he's an action director making a comic thriller about cops versus a Mexican drug gang (yawn).
Cop Out is a comedy film written by screenwriting brothers, Mark and Robb Cullen. The screenplay started out as a spec script by Mark and Robb Cullen, so Kevin Smith's writing talent was not needed. He did not do a re-write of the script, despite some reports stating so. In his stand-up TV special "Too Fat for 40" he stated that he was essentially taking a break from writing as he tried to figure out why some of his more recent movies (namely "Zack and Miri Make a Porno") weren't doing as well. He realized his life circumstances had changed from the days of "Clerks" and "Mallrats" and that to try to write a movie like that at this stage of his life wouldn't be honest. He liked the script for "A Couple of Dicks" (the original and working title of "Cop Out") and loved growing up watching buddy cop movies with his dad. Jason Lee, who frequently works with Smith, appears in a brief (two scene) role as the step-father of Jimmy Monroe (Bruce Willis)'s daughter.
