I have looked in other peoples reviews, if I have to accept that this is an Spaghetti Western then I would have to say that Italians do a much better Western than Hollywood ever did without Italian influence. I'm not Italian, I'm a Uruguayan/Aussie that at 60 can tell when I'm watching unworthy movies or not. Not since unforgiving have I seen a better western. Everyone in this film outdid themselves. Including those I loved to see getting their just comeuppances. Nothing was reduced to silly sentimentality or ridiculous over the top machismo. Just the right touch of humanity and decency. Ethan Hawke, John Travolta, Taissa Farmiga and the rest of the cast were superb. Very few Ethan Hawke movies impressed me much, but I always thought that a good actor sooner or latter stumbles on to a role that shows their true talent. A previous movie that kept me hopping for better from him was Day Walkers. John Travolta, well he has proved many times that he has a better than 50/50 nose for a good movie or he was hunted down when a solid actor was required. Who would have guessed when as young man I was occasionally forced by some chick to watch Welcome Back Kooter, I think it was called. Well I thought the whole show was so silly as to make me cringe with second hand embarrassment. Oh please don't think I criticize John Travolta for his role in it, I applaud any-one who gets paid for doing a TV series and gets paid for it. I'm pretty sure that the J Travolta of today wouldn't take back to such stupid, vapid shows except if he really thought the role would be a blast of fun and humor or even perhaps a gracious repayment to a show that indeed many fans of his liked.
A rather tedious sub-par western of the revenge genre. Despite the names (Hawke and Travolta) it ambles along because it's really not much more than five thousand word short story, the sort of thing one would read in those true adventure type men's mags from years ago. I was struck though by be the rather uninspiring acting, not much short of what small town amateur dramatic folk might put on (The Bedford Falls Players present 'In a valley of violence') James Ransone, who plays the sheriff's (Travolta) son looks and sounds like he's just ended his summer stock shows to appear in this movie.
Most of the action takes place in the incredibly small town of Denton, the props department look like they knocked up the ten or so buildings in a day and oddly there seem to be very few citizens. The one bit of sparkle was the acting of Burn Gorman who plays a drunken priest but he's only on the screen for a few minutes. Director Ti West, who also wrote the script, needs to try harder.
It’s frustrating that West often scores with his few modest attempts to stamp his own imprint on the genre, as those flashes of fun hint at what this movie could have been.
Paul (Ethan Hawke) a drifter and his dog Abbie arrive in a town called Denton, which the local townspeople call "A Valley of Violence" and they decide to stop in town for supplies and water, before leaving town and continuing riding on to Mexico. At the town's local tavern, Gilly Martin (James Ransome) the town's arrogant local Deputy forces Paul to fight him and threatens to shoot Abbie, if he refuses to fight and outside the tavern, Paul fights Gilly and beats him up in front of Gilly's snobby wife Ellen (Karen Gillan) and the townspeople. At the local hotel run by Ellen's sister Mary-Anne (Tarisma Farmiga), Paul is visited by the town's marshal Clyde (John Travolta) whom happens to be Gilly's father and speaks with Paul about the fight and orders Paul to leave town and move on and Clyde orders Gilly to leave Paul alone. But, Gilly decides to ignore Clyde and Gilly attacks Paul and leaves for him dead and Gilly kills Abbie. Paul returns to Denton and is determined to seek revenge upon Gilly. Aided by Mary-Anne, Paul sets off on a killing spree and picks off Gilly's men one by one. When Clyde learns from Mary-Anne that Gilly attacked Paul and killed Abbie and that Gilly disobeyed him and that the murders of Gilly's men is the consequence of his Gilly's own actions. Clyde is forced to take matters into own hands and knowing Paul won't stop until Gilly is dead and he sets out to plead with Paul to put a stop to the killings and not to kill Gilly and Clyde orders Gilly to protect Mary-Anne and Ellen. But, Gilly again decides to ignore his father and sets out to kill Paul, which soon results in a bloody confrontation. a5c7b9f00b
