In psychedelic swinging 60s style, the dreaded thief (and killer) Diabolik wreaks havoc on a generic European country for his own financial gain and amusement. He shares an extravagant underground lair (and a giant bed of money) with his curvaceous, superficial girlfriend...who uses her awesome powers of wig-wearing to help Diabolik kill innocent people and steal billions from the government. Nonetheless, Diabolik is the "hero" of the film because he must face off against bumbling cops and revenge-seeking mafiosos.
In a generic European country of the late 60's, Diabolik is an anti-hero whose life consists on preparing schemes to steal government money and make a fool of the entire police department. Helped by his gorgeous girlfriend Eva, Diabolik begins by stealing a few dollars, but his duel of wit and audacity with police inspector Ginko will take them both to some extreme consequences. Based on the Italian comic books by sisters Angela and Luciana Giussani.
MST3K and its followers seem to have completely missed the point on this one. DIABOLIK is SUPPOSED to be funny. And it is. On purpose. Viewing this movie with the snickering, juvenile amused contempt of MST3K is pointless. How can you make fun of a movie that's making fun of itself? It's like watching the old BATMAN TV series and complaining because the action isn't realistic or hard-hitting enough! If MST3K wanted to pick on a Bava movie, they should have done DR GOLDFOOT AND THE GIRL BOMBS! Fortunately, we're now rid of MST3K, hopefully forever and not soon enough to suit me.
As for DIABOLIK itself, it's a rollicking, tongue-in-cheek spy thriller spiced with sumptuous visuals, courteousy of Mario Bava, the master director of Italian horror and fantasy films. Bava paints in vivid primary colors and adds plenty of eye-catching flourishes, such as the long tracking shot when we first enter Diabolik's hideout. If you can find a widescreen version of the film, see it that way -- it's the only way to fully appreciate Bava's artistic, almost mathematically precise compositions. The characters are one-dimensional, but considering the story's comic book origins, that follows naturally. Although it's a far cry, in terms of content, from Bava's bloody giallo chillers, DIABOLIK ranks among the director's most stylish and enjoyable entertainments.
"Danger: Diabolik" had the honor (?) of being the last movie ever to be eviscerated by the MST3K crew. Judging from the heaps of praise I've seen from various sources, this film may also be the most critically acclaimed movie ever MST'ed!! I guess they really DID want to go out in style! Now I have to ask myself, if I had first seen this supposed Euro-classic without the illuminating and scholarly analysis provided by Mike and the 'bots, what would my impression have been? Would I have appreciated all the Bond-esque gadgetry, the daring costumes, the insanely shagadelic visuals and music... just the sheer visceral grooviness of it all? Moreover, would I have understood the plot at all?
Alas, I'll never know, because those biased MST3K curmudgeons had me convinced this was the crummiest, most pretentious, most boring waste of celluloid ever to emerge from the cultural cesspool known as the late 60's. Toward the end, they quipped about an exotically furry headwear ensemble sported by Diabolik's sexy lover, "Did she get her head stuck in a bear's behind?" Talk about having one's head stuck up a behind! Mike, Servo, and Crow obviously weren't clued in on the fact that "Diabolik" is a true cinematic gem, and in the process they ruined this movie for me forever.
Maybe it's better that the Satellite of Love is now eternally earthbound. Who needs those guys anyway? "Is that stud coming?" Indeed.
