VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is the new adventure film from Luc Besson, the director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers. In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.
In the Century XXVIII, the space station Alpha is a city where beings from different planets live together exchanging their knowledge and culture. Peace is granted by a human force, including Major Valerian and his partner Sergeant Laureline. They are assigned by the Defence Minister to retrieve the last species of converter in a dangerous mission. They succeed and back to Alpha, unknown humanoids abduct Commander Arun Filitt expecting to steal the converter. They head to a forbidden area that is infected but Valerian and Laureline follow them and disclose a hidden secret about the race and the infected area.
It was amazing. It is intelligent science fiction, has characters with real personalities, aliens that don't all look nor act like human beings, and an exciting storyline.
It also has a feminine, and feminist main character that makes wonder woman look like a paper cut out.
I have to say that I have been finding the trend of gross violence and guns to be a disturbing trend in sci-fi, in particular sci-fi that is oriented towards children, such as the Transformers series. The use of CGI to create seemingly realistic worlds where extreme violence can happen gives the wrong impression to people that this kinds of reality actually exists. Enter Luc Besson with a film that is actually REAL sci-fi. Beyond 2001 a Space Odyssey, Martian, Star Trek and also beyond films that try to portray potential real sci-fi such as District 9, most likely Aliens, Interstellar (but the science is so awful as to make the fiction part seem realistic), and then films such as Tarkovsky's Solaris which express a deep intellectual narrative in the quest for alien life, and the understanding of it. REAL Sci-fi is beyond the real, it may be trying to be real (2001) but it should be sufficiently far-fetched that it is beyond the reality that we can imagine, and introduces an alternative that overwhelms us. Valerian achieves this by introducing a real twist. (warning this may be a spoiler?). Take a reality that we have today - built upon many years of space travel and collaboration, the International Space Station. Now take the premise - life on a man-built vessel in space, that grows and sees many new people come and become part of the space age, and that keeps on going and going for now a couple of hundred years. We now see non-humans arrive and yet all are greeted with warmth and friendship. And even as the adventures continue and the original station becomes a vast in space multi-verse this theme of acceptance and friendship continues. Now the only possible link is 2001 (a Space Odyssey), not because this is 2001, but because 2001 introduced a gigantic leap forward in imagination and creativity. I feel that something similar has happened here, that a universe so delirious yet so delicious, might be attainable, that what could be the equivalent of Blade Runner has been built in space, however with all these races and life-forms collaborating to achieve this goal of a shared vision of life. This is the intellectual vision of the beginning of the movie. Whatever the faults with the acting (and yes it could be better, but the critics are not quite right about is being so bad, they need to work with the film's subject matter), my main critique would be about the overreach of the special effects. This film is, I think, a bit beyond it's years in terms of what it is trying to show. The juxtaposition of extremely beautiful scenes in quick succession, with very fast and explosive changes between each scene make for an uneasy first viewing. I think that the film deserves multiple viewings, just for the beauty of the scenes, the depth of them and also the actual real use of 3D as part of the scene, not just as a dramatic pastiche, but as a real part of the scenes, they are 3 dimensional animated paintings. The awkwardness of the 3D in Avatar is here transformed into real beauty. It is slightly unfortunate that the Avatar team could not create people that did not look and seem so much like the Na'avi for the inhabitants of the Müi planet. I would recommend this film wholeheartedly, and despite being slightly long, I think that approaching it with an open mind and looking at it as a great, fun, wild ride that has some real intellectual heft behind it, that actually is asking you to think and to observe as well as just laugh and occasionally shudder, will make you enjoy the film as much as I did. I know that this review is possibly confused and is looking at it from an intellectual angle, this is because this is a film made for fun and for brains - just like the original series Valerian and Laureline was a graphic novel that was also intellectual, cerebral. Accepting this will help mitigate some of the otherwise bad reactions people have because they want or think that this is some slightly deviant French version of a Marvel comic adaptation. It is not, and it is a shame that these things of violence and stupidity have become the norm. Welcome to the new norm. Thanks :-)
During the film’s intoxicating first 30 minutes, for example, I couldn’t decide whether what I was watching was brilliantly bonkers or total folly. Then, as the story went on, it came into sharper and sharper focus: Valerian is an epic mess.
