When a boy named sora and his two friends Riku and Kairi decided to build a raft and leave the island to see other world a dangerous storm hit the island in the middle of the night. Sora decided to check the raft out when these mysterious creatures were appearing Sora who's chosen by the keyblade had to fight them as in Disney castle Donald and goofy got a mission from the King to team up with the chosen one. Sora was separated from Riku and Kairi one was separated by darkness as the other was separated with a light heart. Sora fell in this dark hole where he woke up in a different place which he had never had seen before. It was called traverse town Sora met people who told him about the creatures he was fighting they were called heartless and then he met Donald and Goffy who had a gummi ship that could travel to other worlds. Sora decided to go with them to continue his journey and find Riku and Kairi. Donald and Goffy have their mission to find the King and work with Sora. They have to complete their mission.
Sora's world is shattered when a violent storm hits his home, and is seperated from his two closest friends. The storm scatters the three to unknown worlds. At the same time, there is turmoil in the Disney Castle. King Mickey is missing, and Court Wizard Donald and Captain Goofy are out to find him. On their travels they meet Sora, on his own search for his lost friends. The three are told of ominous creatures called Heartless, being without hearts derived from an unknown dimension and are the ones responsible for the devastating storm. The Disney villians, enticed by the power of darkness, manipulate the Darkness to help them gather the princesses of heart, who are needed to open a mysterious final door. Upon discovering the link between the Heartless, the storm, and the disappearance of King Mickey, Sora, Donald, and Goofy join forces and help familiar Disney heroes to save their worlds from the Heartless.
For anyone who's never wanted a Disney movie to end, this is the game for you. If you're one of those overly nostalgic people who kept on watching those Disney movies over and over again well past the age of twenty while your friends sat and laughed at you, this is the game for you. All of the Disney worlds have been beautifully recreated in 3D, with several very familiar places to visit. It's a thrill to fight alongside your favorite Disney characters against your favorite Disney villains, with a few Final Fantasy characters thrown in on the side for kicks. Even if you aren't a little kid or extremely familiar with Disney or Final Fantasy, you'll like this game, simply because of its great story (which somehow seems to borrow a lot of philosophy from Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" - especially closer to the end). The style of battle is similar to that in the Legend of Zelda series, as opposed to the fighting in Final Fantasy titles. It also comes complete with an all-star cast, with many of the original Disney performers making returns. The only downside? This game is way too short (at only about 25 hours - if you rush, or about 50 if you fool around or work to get the secret ending) for the hardcore Disney fan. I also have a few issues with the unruly camera that makes battles with huge groups of enemies very "interesting." My friends have also complained when they found out this game was only available on Playstation 2. However, these small annoyances aren't worth steering clear of this game. I also have to thank this game for introducing me to the world of Final Fantasy. I have since gone on to play Final Fantasy VII, X, and X-2, since Kingdom Hearts features characters from these games - and these are great games as well. But that's another story.
Like most other Square Fans, I was extremely skeptical when I first heard that the RPG legend would be teaming up with Disney, of all people, to produce a game. However, as time went on and more screenshots and gameplay tidbits were released, Kingdom Hearts became more and more appealing. Thankfully, When the big release day finally arrived, I was not disappointed. Square had managed to perfectly intergrate the Disney mythos along with the Final Fantasy universe to create a game of a game. Square has once again shown its talent for creating magical RPGs.
Kingdom Hearts is truly a stunning accomplishment and may very well be the game of the year for 2002. The biggest problem with Kingdom Hearts is that many gamers are bashing it because of the inclusion of the Disney characters without even playing the game. This is very short-sighted. Kingdom Hearts is a classic game, and if you own a PS2, this is one game that should absolutely be in your collection.
