In the distant future, a police marshal stationed at a remote mining colony on the Jupiter moon of Io uncovers a drug-smuggling conspiracy, and gets no help from the populace when he later finds himself marked for murder.
Policeman Marshal William T. O' Niel has been transferred to the mining outpost located on Io, one of Jupiter's moons. And O' Neil is about to have the worst time of his life at the mining outpost, when he is assigned to investigate the violent deaths of miners, only to discover the miners have died of drug overdoses from a lethal drug. As O' Niel sets out to find the drug dealers, he finds himself the target of hired assassins, whom have been hired to assassinate O' Niel. With no help from the Police Force, O' Niel sets out to stand against the drug dealers, as he begins to suspect the outpost's corrupt administrator Sheppard may be involved with the drug dealers.
By now you've read the other reviews, and they are arguably right-It's like High Noon, there are some logical errors, etc., but there are also good performances from Connery and-especially- from Frances Sternhagen, who almost upstages the star. In lieu of a comely ingenue on the spacecraft to take the Marshall's mind off his job, we get Ms. Sternhagen as a wise, prophetic ship's doctor of a certain age,to whom he instantly takes a liking, if only because she isn't handing out the boilerplate crap he's getting from all the higher-ups. I liked it when it came out in 1981, but as the years have passed, what I remember about it is the scenes between Sean Connery and Frances Sternhagen.
When Outland first came out, it was surrounded by tough competition. Hence, it was somewhat overlooked. Now, after viewing it again in 2010, I'm astounded by how bleeding-edge this film is. It's prediction of how a mining operation of the future would look strikes one as very plausible (factoring in cost considerations, square footage allowances, fire regulations, etc...). Clearly, a lot of effort was spent getting the look and 'feel' of the story's world nailed down. Then there's the psychological and sociological aspects of working in remote work camps, field sites, or mining operations. Again, there's incredible attention to detail. The sets are remarkable, and the artistry of the weathering and lighting setups is superb. Smart predictions were made for the presentation of server computers, use of fiber-optics, floor plans, and even styles of music. Amazingly, the score for one of the later leisure club scenes contains rhythms that would not appear until a few years later as proto-electro-industrial music.
I now realize that I was too young to appreciate the more sophisticated aspects of this film, back in 1981. The subtle nuances of character interaction are much more clear, based on the motivations of each of them. A lot of scenes are played pretty low-key in this film. But -- in reality -- they would be. There's only so much a real person in this sort of situation could do or say. Kudos to the writer for getting this across in a realistic way (much like Dan O'Bannon's writing), and kudos to the actors for living their characters.
This is a great late-night film. It takes its time and pulls you into a visually rich world that would fit nicely into the universe of Alien and Blade Runner. Not surprisingly, some of the crew who worked on this film, also worked on Alien and Star Wars : A New Hope. The attention to visual detail, and the aesthetic choices are what led me to dig around for more information on who put together the look, feel, and sound of this film.
To those who worked on this, well done. You've made a film that has aged well, and has managed to take a story from one genre (a western) and translate it into another. All this goes to prove that times and technology change, but human motivations do not.
For those who haven't seen this in a long time, or at all, be sure to add it to your list of films to watch.
