Thomas gets deposited into an area with a bunch of other male teens who have no memory of what happened earlier, finding himself in a grassland called a glade surrounded by large, dangerous and formidable stone walls that form a maze. After an incident that occurs one night, chaos erupts and now Thomas needs to team up with a large number of gladers, destroy the cyborg monsters that haunt the glade (called grievers) and, if he can, form an escape.
A boy wakes up in an elevator with no recollection of his name, where he comes from, or where he is. As he emerges from the earth, he finds himself in a community of boys, living in a glade. As the boy slowly starts unearthing memories, such as his name, Thomas, he also finds out more sinister things from the other boys about the place he's landed. The boys are held prisoners within the center of a gigantic maze, and for three years they've been looking for a way out. Now it's up to Thomas to find that way, but the road isn't going to be easy, as any who dare enter the maze finds himself hunted by the Grievers.
My immediate thought while watching The Maze Runner was just how close the whole premise was to Vincent Natali's sci-fi horror Cube (1997), both films featuring a group of people who wake to find themselves in a strange environment with no memory of how they got there. The big difference is that, where Cube was a brilliantly executed low-budget thriller with nail-biting tension and a thought provoking ambiguous climax, The Maze Runner is a mega-budget blockbuster that, for much of its running time, moves like molasses, and which ends leaving questions that we know will be answered, just so long as we shell out more cash to see the next couple of instalments.
Obviously, at 47 I'm not exactly in the intended demographic for this film, but I do feel that this one missed the opportunity to be a hugely entertaining adventure for all ages. When the characters are in the maze, running for their lives from the grievers (metallic insectoid monsters), or dodging the changing architecture, the film is actually very enjoyable, but far too much time is spent in the relative safety of 'the glade', the idyllic green area at the centre of the maze where the boys first wake up. With my son currently reading the series of books, it's almost certain that I'll have to watch the sequels; I just hope that they make it a little more exciting next time around (and don't cut the film to reduce the UK rating to a 12 certificate. Grrrrrr!).
5.5/10, rounded up to 6 for IMDb.
Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape. The Maze Runner is clearly the next step to this phase of teen franchises after the big success of The Hunger Games and the less successful Divergent Series but the end result is not as good as i hoped. In terms of casting the movie is brillaint i mean Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario and the rest of the Cast are perfect for each of their roles but the film's pacing and narrative was kinda messy and there isn't as much action as i hoped either. Overall this Franchise isn't Perfect but it's not awful either. (6/10)
For its first half or so, The Maze Runner tells a captivating tale of survival and weaves a potentially interesting mystery. Once its path become clear, however, you realize this is a puzzle you've worked out before.
Thomas and Teresa do not speak to each other telepathically in the film.
Teresa doesn't go into a coma.
Teresa and Thomas first speak to each other in a tree top post.
Thomas uses a stinger from a killed griever to stab himself.
WICKED (World In Chaos: Killzone Experiment Department) is called WCKD in the movie.
"WICKED is Good" is not written on Teresa's arm.
In the film the outer sections of the maze are numbered from 1 to 8. Every night when the maze changes, it opens up a new section.
The key code needed to get out of the maze is a strand of numbers instead of words and it's a sequence based on a pattern of changes of the maze's outer sections.
The griever hole is not a void/cliff. Instead is a door/hole in the wall (seen on trailers).
Gally uses a gun to kill Chuck. Then, using a spear, Minho strikes and hits Gally on the chest.
Instead of being taken away from the Maze by bus, the gladers leave in a helicopter.
In the book it never rains in the maze, but in the movie it does.
The Serum does not come on the regular delivery via the box, instead it comes with Teresa, two of them, and they it use to cure Alby and Thomas from the stinger venom.
The sky of the glade/maze is not 'fabricated'. The whole structure is actually in open sky and it can be seen at the end of the movie, as the helicopter flies by. And with that, the sky does not turn grey.
Gally is never being taken by a griever, but he does get stung.
All the scientists are already dead when the gladers get to the facility.
Ben is a runner in the film and he gets stung by a griever at day time when he enters the maze by himself.
There are no beetle blades in the movie.
Teresa shows up on the fourth day instead of second and she awakens later at that same day. a5c7b9f00b
