CIA Analyst Jack Ryan is drawn into an illegal war fought by the US government against a Colombian drug cartel. When an American businessman who is a good friend of the President's is killed along with his entire family, the killings appear to be the work of a Colombian Drug Cartel. Upon hearing this, the President tells his National Security Adviser -- James Cutter-- that he wants him to start a Black Op against the Colombians. At the same time the President orders every agency to find out why his friend was killed. CIA Deputy Director James Greer, whom the President has asked for help as well, is in poor health, so he asks his protege -- Jack Ryan-- to fill in for him. Jack finds himself working with Robert Ritter (whom Greer has told him him not to trust)and Ritter is the very person Cutter has asked to handle the operation. Jack eventually finds out that the dead businessman may have been involved with the Colombians and may have been embezzling from them. When Ritter puts the plan into operation, the Colombians are wondering who is after them. So, the Cartel's intelligence man "Felix Cortez" tries to find out, while he is--at the same time-- plotting to assassinate Ernesto Escobedo (the head of the cartel) and take over the entire operation. When a CIA secretary, who had been seen with Cortez in D.C.turns up dead, Ryan becomes convinced that there is a three-way conspiracy afoot which might extend all the way to the White House. Harrison Ford reprises his role as Jack Ryan after the mediocre "Patriot Games." Ford isn't as good as Alec Baldwin in the role, but he's adequate.

This time, we see Ryan assigned to help fight a South American drug cartel.

This movie is good, but could have been better. The first half reeks of "war on drugs" propaganda that makes it hard for us to enjoy the movie. The second half is much better, in which we realize the scope of what's going on, and with the requisite action.

James Earl Jones returns as Admiral Greer, the comic relief. Anne Archer also returns as Ryan's beautiful wife, but Archer is again rather dull in the role. Willem Dafoe and Benjamin Bratt have small but impressive roles as soldiers in South America. But the real standout is Henry Czerny as the chilling, unscrupulous jerk Ritter.

This isn't as good as "The Hunt for Red October," but it's better than "Patriot Games" and "The Sum of All Fears." I had read the novel before, so I had high hopes on the film. I was so disappointed. The film not only botches the book quite badly, but has errors of its own :

*** Possible spoilers ****

  • The whole point of assembling a special ops team of soldiers from Latino origin, was to make them difficult to identify as US forces. However, they happily yell in clear English on all combat scenes.

  • Willem Dafoe as Clark is a TERRIBLE miscast. The character is always depicted as a tall, broad shouldered person. (Liev Schreiber is also a bad choice for the same role on Sum of All Fears).

  • Almost all roles on the book are changed beyond recognition : CIA Dep. Dir. Robert Ritter is not the bad guy depicted on the movie; FBI Dir. Jacobs and Agent Murray are both killed on the movie (they are important characters on next novels); on the novel, James Cutter kills himself by walking in front of a bus.

  • The soldiers persecution on the jungle seems like a bunch of scared kids running from a gang; the novel depiction of tactics and ambush scenes are FAR superior.

  • And of course, the inevitable final up-close-and-personal fight between Ryan and Cortez : guess what, never happened on the book, since Ryan never gets off the Blackhawk rescue helicopter (not the puny Bell from the movie), because he is busy manning a machine gun. It seems that Hollywood thinks that a movie is incomplete without a "heroic" fist fight (the same issue that completely botched the ending of Patriot Games). Originally, Cortez is left alive on the backyard of one of the surviving drug lords : THAT is a punishment!!

In all, the movie not only presents a simplistic plot of bad guy-good guy, but ignores completely a much more complex conspiracy and anti-drug operation. This film had all the ingredients to be just great, but you get just cartoonist bad guys, a couple of good action scenes and a laughable ending. Another fast, gripping spy story with some good tricks up its sleeve. Clear and Present Danger is based on the 1989 novel of the same title by American author Tom Clancy. It is a sequel to two other films featuring Jack Ryan: The Hunt for Red October (1990) (1990) and Patriot Games (1992) (1992). Yet another sequel, The Sum of All Fears (2002) was released in 2002. The novel was adapted for the movie by screenwriters Donald Stewart, Stephen Zailllian, and John Milius. A reboot of the franchise started with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) in 2014. No. Clear and Present Danger works as an independent story from all of the previous films. The only carryover question from Patriot Games is the gender of Jack (Harrison Ford) and Cathy (Anne Archer) Ryan's about-to-be-born child (a son). In the film, when discussing the problem of the South American drug cartels in the U.S., President Bennett (Donald Moffat) says that they represent a "clear and present danger" to the national security of the United States. The phrase comes from a legal opinion by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes and deals with the circumstances under which the government may legally regulate speech. Holmes offered the standard that speech can be regulated when it will create a situation which constitutes a "clear and present danger" that the government has an interest in preventing. The hypothetical example used by Holmes was falsely shouting "fire" in a crowded theater. Such a situation is punishable by the government since, in this case, the speech would present a clear (easily foreseeable) and present (imminent) danger that people in the theater would get hurt in an effort to flee a fictitious fire. The flag was that of Panama. The reason why the Colombians put up the flag was to show that they were Panamanian and that the coast guard had no jurisdiction to stop them. However the US Coast Guard has agreements with many countries around the world such that they can stop any ship they feel is suspicious. The boat was registered to the US, so the Coast Guard had an incontrovertible reason to stop it. Cortez (Joaquim de Almeida) killed Moira (Ann Magnuson) because she was a loose end who could potentially identify him if ever there was an investigation into who knew FBI director Emile Jacobs (Tom Tammi) was going to Colombia. Moira didn't know Cortez's real name, but she could have put a face to the file that the CIA/DEA already had for him. Moira was also a "honeypot" as she was unknowingly feeding Cortez detailed information through her intimate relationship with him. Jack Ryan's real name is John Patrick Ryan. Jack is a nickname for John, just as Bob is a nick for Robert. It's the Largo from the Symphony N°9 (aka New World Symphony) by Antonin Dvorák and commonly known as Going Home, a standard tune for pipe bands to play at funerals for police officers and military personnel. So far, Clancy has written 12 novels that feature Jack Ryan. They are: The Hunt for Red October (1984), Patriot Games (1987), The Cardinal of the Kremlin (1988), Clear and Present Danger (1989), The Sum of All Fears (1991), Without Remorse (1993), Debt of Honor (1994), Executive Orders (1996), Rainbow Six (1998) (mention only), The Bear and the Dragon (2000), Red Rabbit (2002), and The Teeth of the Tiger (2003). Of the 12 books in the Ryan-universe, five have so far been made into movies—The Hunt for Red October (1990) (1990), Patriot Games (1992) (1992), Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears (2002) (2002), and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) (2014). Without Remorse is currently in development without an expected release date. a5c7b9f00b
