When news magnate James Reid dies, his son Britt and chauffeur Kato, resentful of Reid's slights, vandalize a graveyard statue. By chance, they also rescue a couple from thugs, but TV reports the vandalism, not the heroism. Britt, thinking he's a genius while relying on Kato's mechanical and kung-fu skills, decides to be a superhero, the Green Hornet, and use his father's paper to play up the bad-guy elements. The reporting on the Hornet upsets LA's DA, who's up for reelection, and the city's real crime boss, Chudnofsky. Plus, how long will Kato suffer in silence, when he has all the skill? Competition for the affection of Britt's assistant, Lenore, brings things to a head. Playboy Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) becomes the new publisher of Los Angeles' "The Daily Sentinel" after the sudden death of his father. Britt's party life is about to change when he and his driver and kung fu expert, Kato (Jay Chou), stop a robbery. With the help of Kato, Britt starts a new career of fighting crime as the masked superhero "The Green Hornet". Having read a lot of negativity on this film in all honesty I wasn't expecting much. And eventually seeing The Green Hornet did little to change that. I give it two stars for the performances of Jay Chou and Christolph Waltz, who are both very good. The rest in my view is disposable. I disliked Seth Rogan in this, he tries too hard and his character is loud and irritating to the point that you'd wish he'd shut up, while Cameron Diaz has nothing to do other than be eye-candy. The action scenes are generic and shot in quite badly-done slow motion, and the direction is bland mostly. The characters are either uninteresting or annoying, the script is unfunny and tiresome and the story thin and screams of irritation and predictability. All in all, apart from two good performances The Green Hornet is a mess. 2/10 Bethany Cox Not that bad, really. Not that good, either. It's incredibly silly, but it doesn't at all take itself seriously, so, at its best, it can be fun. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you like Seth Rogen. Personally, I think people underrate his talent. The best material in the movie is his endless banter. If you don't find him funny, the film will certainly be a huge dud for you. I like him, so his constant riffing was making me laugh a lot. The second best thing about it is Christoph Waltz's performance as the villain. He's not great, but the joke that, as a villain, he's not scary enough is a good running gag (he changes his difficult-to-remember name Chudnofsky to Bloodnofsky late in the film, and comes up with a convoluted catch phrase to say whenever he's about to kill someone, but he just can't get it out of his mouth quickly enough). Third best: James Franco's cameo as a gangster nightclub owner who foolishly chooses to pick a fight with Waltz near the beginning of the film. The film's biggest misstep: Jay Chou as Kato. Rogen apparently handpicked the guy himself, but it was an unwise choice. The biggest problem is that he can barely speak English. With every line, he clumsily stumbles over every word, not only mostly incomprehensible but also slowing the film down at vital moments. Cameron Diaz and Tom Wilkinson also appear, but don't have anything much to do. The action sequences aren't all that good (they're very Matrixy). It's not too surprising, as Michel Gondry is a very sloppy filmmaker. Let's face it, Eternal Sunshine was a miracle. He's never produced anything close to that afterward. Injecting a devil-may-care attitude into a franchise-focused blockbuster only gets you so far. When all is said and done, this wasp's got no sting. It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black. It's called "Live With Me" by the Rolling Stones. a5c7b9f00b
