Sidelined for five years since they spectacularly rescued New York City from destruction. the superstars of the supernatural spring back into action when the infant son of single mother Dana Barrett becomes the target of a powerful demonic force. Reunited with the no-nonsense Zeddemore, nerdy nearsighted Louis, and their ever-industrious secretary Janine, the heroes of the hereafter must put a stop to an enormous underground river of slime ready to rot the roots of the entire Big Apple. Now, if your hometown was on the verge of being sucked down into the 10th level of Hell, who else would you call? Five years after the events of the first film, the Ghostbusters have been plagued by lawsuits and court orders, and their once-lucrative business is bankrupt. But when Dana has ghost problems again, the boys come out of retirement and are promptly arrested. The Ghostbusters discover that New York is once again headed for supernatural doom, with a river of ectoplasmic slime bubbling beneath the city and an ancient sorcerer attempting to possess Dana's baby and be reborn. Can the Ghostbusters quell the negative emotions feeding the otherworldly threat and stop the world from being slimed? This film has, the past, had a lot of people saying a lot of negative things about it. Whether that is still the case in 2006, I don't know. GB2 in my opinion is a worthy sequel to the original film. Okay, so it was never going to be a patch on the original, but in the Hollywood-world-o-sequels, even a "good" film is a triumph! Waynes World Two is a perfect example. (Thank God they didn't do a second Titanic movie!)

In this film the Ghost Busters are back, but the regular stream of work has dried-up and they are reduced to their own various 'normal' jobs - Egon is back in the Lab, Ray now runs an Occult Bookshop and Peter is where he should've always been ... hosting a cheesy talk show. But the strange goings-on soon return in the form of Vigo the Carpathian - and evil and nasty spirit-entity who plans to return to life through the body of Dana Barrets child, Oscar - thus bringing about the END OF THE WORLD! ... and so on.

A fairly simple plot, but still as funny and, most importantly, entertaining as ever. A great Friday-night film. Get a pizza, a pack of cheap beer and enjoy this classic. Ghostbusters 2 ends up being another one of those movies that I enjoyed watching as a kid, but nowadays I'm smart enough to see what's wrong with it - just like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

The main problem with Ghostbusters 2 simply is the fact there's not enough meat to it. The action is great - the special effects still hold up today, mostly. But where the movie really starts to stumble is the comedy. Now, I've mentioned in a previously that, as a kid, I never really envisioned Ghostbusters as strictly a comedy per-say, and it really bugged me watching the original on DVD because they treated it like it was another Caddyshack, you know? Nothing wrong with Caddyshack, but I don't picture Ghostbusters as a Caddyshack-esquire movie. Ghostbusters 2 really forces the comedy in this regard; it feels bland, rushed, and just lame. While as a kid I might've found Bill Murray screaming at a painting amusing, as a man of 22, I can only wince in pain. It's no wonder Murray was the biggest roadblock in getting Ghostbusters 3 off the ground; Ghostbusters 2 must've embarrassed the hell out of him. It embarrasses me just to watch him. And when the movie runs out of ghost-busting action and Luke-warm comedy, it does what every lame sequel does: It re-treads content from the first movie with a slight twist. Taking the role of our Hardened Skeptic in the first movie was Walter Peck, who eventually had the Ghostbusters arrested. Ghostbusters 2 replaces him with a new character who is pretty much the exact same person, except now he's the Mayor's Aide, and he has the Ghostbusters acquitted. These scenes play out pretty much exactly as they did in the first Ghostbusters, but with the aforementioned Luke-warm comedy replacing Murray's sharp wit.

Although the edge on the knife has become dull, Ghostbusters 2 still did manage to be a pretty okay movie though. There are times when it hits that mixture that made the first movie a success. The movie is very watchable, but get ready for a few painful moments. As amiable and formfitting as Ghostbusters II can be, it's a thin, dimly conceived affair. For all its rave-up special effects, it adds little to director Ivan Reitman's original, which itself was no fountain of wit but at least had a fresh gimmick going for it. [16 Jun 1989, p.37] Five years after their near destruction of New York City after which they were sued until bankrupt and a restaining order placed on them that prevents them from working as Ghostbusters, Doctors Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), aided by their attorney Louis Tully (Rick Moranis), finally convince a judge to lift the restraining order. Voila! The Ghostbusters are back in business and just in the nick of time as a massive river of "mood slime" is flowing through the abandoned Pneumatic Transit tunnels under Manhattan, and it appears that an ancient Carpathian sorcerer, Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf, (Wilhelm von Homburg) wants to possess Dana Barrett's (Sigourney Weaver) 8-month-old baby Oscar (William T. Deutschendorf and Henry J. Deutschendorf II). Ghostbusters II is the sequel to Ghost Busters (1984) (1984), both of which were written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Ghostbusters II was subsequently novelized in 1989 by American scifi/mystery writer Ed Naha. "Mood slime" is pictured as pink ectoplasm and described as a psychoreactive substance that responds to human emotional states. In short, it feeds on bad vibes. It was not explicitly mentioned what the slime was made of. They do, however, imply the slime was "brought to life" by Vigo and powered by the general bad vibes of the New Yorkers. You could take from this that the slime was either created by "ghost-power" or that the slime started from something very small and absorbed various elements from its environment. It was eventually established in the 2009 video game Ghostbusters (2009) that the slime was manufactured by a contraption created by Ivo Shandor, the Gozer worshiper. Dana only mentions that Oscar's father left her to play with orchestras in Europe. Fans have speculated that the father is Timothy Carhart's character from the original movie, the violinist that Venkman calls "the stiff." This isn't made clear in the movie. It may be that, through his father, Oscar is a member of some family or bloodline that makes him a distant relative of Vigo. Or perhaps Dana's experience being possessed in the original film may have somehow made her son ripe for possession himself. Of course, it is actually Janosz who selects Oscar, no doubt due to his feelings for Dana. Vigo simply requests "a child" and it is likely that he would have been just as satisfied with any other baby. With just four minutes to go until midnight, Dana watches helplessly as Vigo begins his transfer into Oscar's body. Suddenly, the torch-bearing arm of the Statue of Liberty crashes through the skylight, Dana grabs Oscar, interrupting the transfer, and the Ghostbusters rappel down. They shoot positively-charged slime all over Janosz (Peter MacNicol) (who'll wake up feeling like "a million bucks"). Vigo immobilizes Dana and the Ghostbusters and materializes out of the painting. He picks up Oscar and prepares to possess his body. Meanwhile outside, Louis arrives in full ghostbusters attire, and the crowd begins singing "Auld Lang Syne" as he zaps the slime barrier with a proton stream. The positive energy causes the barrier to disintegrate and forces Vigo back into the painting. In desperation, Vigo takes over Ray's body, but the others cover him with positive slime, destroying Vigo. As they revel in all the positive energy, Winston notices that the painting of Vigo has been replaced with a scene showing the four Ghostbusters standing protectively around Oscar. "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" written by Jackie Wilson. In the movie it is performed by Howard Huntsberry, though the Jackie Wilson original is heard during the dancing toaster scene. a5c7b9f00b
