A furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.
After a cyber attack to a Chinese nuclear facility and to the American commodities market, the governments decide to hunt the blackhat together. Colonel Chen Dawai is assigned by the Chinese government and he meets the American Carol Barrett and Mark Jessup in Los Angeles. He invites his sister Chen Lien and he discovers that the hacker used a computer code developed by his old MIT friend Nick Hathaway that is in prison for stealing money from banks. He requests that Nick joins the team and they have to travel to China following the lead. Along their journey, Nick and Lien fall in love with each other. However they can not discover the motivation for the attack and Nick has to do a risky move to find the location of the hacker. Will he succeed in finding who is the responsible for the attacks?
The trailer seemed kinda cool for this one but, instead, I found a film that was overwhelming in the fact it was underwhelming.
I dig that the film presents a more realistic vision of hackers and trended away from doing cyber crime that way action films often present it (read that as WAY over-the-top and to the point that a lot of screenwriters might not actually know how computers work) but I quickly realized why we usually go so nuts with the hacker criminals in the movies because this version just resulted in a story that never feels too important or that interesting. Then, as if mirroring this feel, the visuals are bland and forgettable and the paltry action that is delivered in such a way that it's clear it exists only as an apology for the fact you are probably wasting your time watching the film comes off as being completely pointless and uninteresting. The cast in the film is doing their job well enough but it's just not enough to save this mediocre and mundane feature.
I don't know where to begin. The first three minutes of the movie made me desperately search for the exit door. No movie that I saw lacked the camera and acting skills so much. Throughout the movie there is not a single scene that didn't make my eyes bleed from the poor acting and camera. I have seen terrible movies, I have seen the worst of the worst and my imagination did not even consider there was something that could top that. I consider "Dumb and dumber to" to be the masterpiece of the year deserving all the Oscars compared to Blackhat. I am a programmer and I have done some things in my life I am not proud of. How on earth could you "hack" with simple commands like "who" and "tell" is beyond my imagination. To top that, he dropped a key logger disguised as a freaking .pdf file. How stupid do you think the NSA/CIA is to open an attachment from a spoofed email that says "Password guidelines.pdf". Now for the "acting". If there is something that can make you go full retard by the end of the movie that is it. I don't know how many brain cells I wasted watching it, but I do know I was drooling by the end. At no point the bad guy was a bad guy ... At no point the good guy was a hacker ... It got so boring at a point that half the people left 5 minutes before the end of the movie. I wish I could have done that but my remaining brain cells and my wife (that was laughing hysterically at every scene at this point) demanded we see the "end". I can only tell you the best moment of your lives will be the end credits and the feeling you are free to go home from that travesty.
