The story of the first major battle of the American phase of the Vietnam War, and the soldiers on both sides that fought it, while their wives wait nervously and anxiously at home for the good news or the bad news.
A telling of the 1st Battalion, 7 Cavalry Regiment, 1st Calvary Division's battle against overwhelming odds in the La Drang valley of Vietnam in 1965. Seen through the eyes of the battalion's commander, Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore (played by Mel Gibson), we see him take command of the battalion and its preparations to go into Vietnam. We also see how the French had, years earlier, been defeated in the same area. The battle was to be the first major engagement between U.S. and N.V.A. forces in South Vietnam, and showed the use of helicopters as mobility providers and assault support aircraft.
I think the first thing I would like to point is that Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace is most definitely the best team since Don Simpson (R.I.P) and Jerry Bruckheimer.
This is most likely the most emotionally driven movie that I have EVER seen in my life. I am a 23 year old male and I bawled like a little 4 month old baby walking out of the theater. Okay, call me old fashioned but the tribute to the soldiers who died in that battle which is displayed during the beginning of the end credits was probably the best and most emotionally charged experience I have ever had.
I think that this proves ones again that Mel Gibson is absolutely the best actor ever to walk on the face of this planet. Hell, if you doubt me do yourself a favor, rent Ransom, Braveheart and The Patriot before you se this movie and this will prove once again my point about his ability to bring a character to life on screen and that his portrayal of Hal Moore is not just a once of thing. Oh yeah, do not forget the unforgettable Lethal Weapon Quartet.
My upmost congratulations to the Cast and the Producers of this film. You have created a masterpiece that will go down in history with same bang and admiration such as Platoon, Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan (my hats of to Spielberg by the way)
One thing that bothers me a little is the whole casting of Chris 'Rollerball' Klein. Don't get me wrong, he is a very good actor and I like him a lot (SPOILER ALERT!!) and for the little while he appeared in the film he portrayed his character exceptionally good but I do not think he is action hero material. In my opinion he is to soft a person and to well spoken and personally I think he would do better by sticking to the Romantic Comedy Genre.
All and all this film would get a very realistic 12/10 and if you like your war movies make sure that you see this on the big screen. VHS or DVD just wouldn't do it any justice.
Well, I can only say one thing about this movie, POWERFUL.
It must have been one of the best war movies I have ever seen, the soundtrack on the DVD is a blast and a workout for every sub, and still the soundtrack can be very sweet.
Emotional this movie hits the jackpot for me, were all others failed to let people really cry this one succeeded.
a 10+ a must see.

Gibson may get top billing, but it's Sam Elliott who steals all the scenes. As Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley, a man who fires with his own .45 revolver rather than the standard M-16 rifles, he's full of hilariously colorful comments.
When the VC soldier runs into the hollowed out tree, he checks the magazine in his AK-47, which was empty. He is pondering what he should do, when he fastens his bayonet on his rifle. His objective was likely to take out the Commanding Officer. But considering he had no ammo left, he ran the risk of dying trying to bayonet the Colonel or live and not complete his objective. This is done to make sure the rounds are properly seated in the magazine (so that the back end of the casing with the primer is flush against the back end of the mag). This reduces the risk of the weapon jamming. You can see Private Reiben do it in the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan (1998) with a magazine for his BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) and Cowboy do it in Full Metal Jacket (1987). a5c7b9f00b
