Members of an elite DEA task force find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house.
An elite DEA team raids the safe house of a drug cartel and hide $10 million in the plumbing. When they go back to retrieve the money it is not there. The team is under investigation for the missing $10 million. Then after a couple months the investigation is lifted. The team trains together again and then celebrates at a strip club. Then one of the team is murdered. He wakes up in his RV on railroad tracks. Then a second team member is nailed to the ceiling. The third team member is gunned down at his remote cabin. There is a female City of Atlanta investigator in charge of the murders. After investigating the cartel angle, the twisted truth comes to light.
SABOTAGE (2014) **1/2 Arnold Schwarzenegger, Olivia Williams, Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway, Terrence Howard, Max Martini, Kevin Vance, Mireille Enos, Martin Donovan, Harold Perrineau,Troy Garity. Relatively by-the-numbers action vehicle for Ah-nold (looking a tad rough-around-the-edges) as the leader of a co-op DEA command that find themselves under the microscope and possibly in the cross-hairs of a drug cartel oh and the titular work of one of their members too boot when a cache of stolen loot remains missing. Usual shoot 'em-up pyrotechniques and 'witticisms' thanks to a surprisingly flat-footed screenplay but director David Ayer (doing yeoman work at best) and Skip Woods wasting most of the talent cast, with only wild card Enos seeming to be enjoying her gig and Williams as a fellow fed investigating the murder-by-numbers of Arnie's outfit.
You really have to wonder what the hell convinced Arnold Schwarzenegger to star in this movie. Perhaps he was still hurting over his divorce and not thinking properly. Maybe he owed the screenwriter a favour or maybe he just needed the money, but whatever the reasons it can't have been because of the high quality script, because 'Sabotage' is the very worst film of his career. Yes, it's worse than 'Jingle All The Way' and 'Batman & Robin.' It's foul mouthed, violent, nihilistic and completely devoid of any redeeming features at all. It's the kind of film that makes you feel grubby just for watching it and not in a good way. It's a movie about ugly, unpleasant people doing unpleasant things to each other and by the time the credits roll, you'll be convinced the world is a bleak, oppressive hell hole and that all human beings are just walking bags of excrement deserving of death.
The plot revolves around an 'undercover DEA team' who specialise in infiltrating Latin American Drug Cartels. As 'Breacher,' Schwarzenegger is the permanently-scowling leader and he's joined by some of the most ludicrously macho supporting characters since 'Predator.' There's "Monster" (muscular and angry), "Grinder" (muscular and angry), "Pyro" (muscular and angry), "Neck" (muscular and angry), "Tripod" (muscular and angry), "Sugar" (muscular and angry) and "Lizzy" (muscular, angry and a girl). And none of them appears to have the faintest idea of what "undercover" means because within the first five minutes they've smashed several doors open, gunned down about a dozen people who can't speak English and sprayed the walls of a drug mansion with blood.
If that makes this sound like a good old fashioned eighties-style action romp, think again. This is not the ludicrous mini-gun waving, bad-quipping fun of 'Total Recall' or 'Commando' and the mood remains bleak and oppressive throughout. At one point, Monster tells the tragic back-story of Breacher's wife and son being tortured and killed by the Cartel, but he does so with such a graphic description, it's as if the film is on a single minded mission to repulse anyone that watches it.
What's worse is that there is nobody to empathise with. Schwarzenegger grimaces, puffs on cigars, looks miserable for every second he's on screen and is terrible. He even looks pained during the implausible love scene. The rest of his team meanwhile are obnoxious, rude, swaggering Neanderthals whose conversation is peppered with profanities and largely revolves around bodily functions. They begin by trying to steal ten million dollars, follow this up by starting a fight in a nightclub and needlessly insulting everyone that crosses their path. There's nothing wrong with making films about unpleasant people of course ('Wolf Of Wall Street' for example excels in it), but there's nothing remotely engaging about any of them. They're just empty-vessels, existing solely to throw knives into people between bench-pressing competitions and as they get bumped off one by one it's hard to muster even the slightest emotion.
As for the plot, well the film is a confusing mix of action movie and mystery thriller. As an unknown killer stalks the team, the in- fighting begins and cracks begin to show. In fact the group breaks down so rapidly it's a miracle they've lasted this long at all. Even the action sequences are dismal. There's a greater air of realism abut them than most of Arnie's old movies, but there's no tension or suspense, just increasing levels of plain nastiness. Again, extreme violence can exist in a film for a purpose but in 'Sabotage,' it has a lurid, voyeuristic quality and you get the impression that if they'd had the opportunity to put real corpses on screen they would have.
If all this sounds overly critical, please bear in mind; I love Arnie's back catalogue. I have no problems with screen violence, bad language or any of cinema's myriad dark subjects, but 'Sabotage' is just horrible. It's like it hoovered up as much unpleasantness as possible then vomited it back on screen and forced someone to eat it. There's a few odd moments when Sam Worthington looks genuinely disappointed in himself and there's more depth to be found in WWE story lines. It's a vile, putrid mess of a film and about as enjoyable as licking your own stomach acid out of an open, maggoty flesh wound. I bet Terrence Howard regrets not doing 'Iron Man 2' even more now.
The rest of Sabotage rarely rises to Schwarzenegger’s level, in large measure because the other characters (of which there are far too many) aren’t nearly as sharply drawn by Ayer and co-writer Skip Woods.
