When his mentor is taken captive by a disgraced Arab sheik, a killer-for-hire is forced into action. His mlission: kill three members of Britain's elite Special Air Service responsible for the death of his sons.
Loosely based on a true story, Killer Elite pits two of the worlds' most elite operatives - Danny, a ruthless killer-for-hire (Robert De Niro) - against the cunning leader of a secret society of former Special Air Service operatives('Clive Owen'). Covering the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East, Danny and Hunter are plunged into a highly dangerous game of revenge and deception - where things are not always what they appear to be.
Despite the, by now almost obligatory, preface that Killer Elite is 'based on a true story - so, apparently, was Jack And The Beanstalk - the film is at heart just another, although well-produced, slice of testosterone-charged hokum.
Our heroes - 'heroes' in the sense of 'protagonists' not in any celebratory sense as to a man they are unsavoury killers - manage to traverse the world at ease, appearing in Mexico, Oman, London, Herefordshire, Australia and Paris in a trice as whim might take them. Not for them, obviously, the hassle of security checks - in which evidence might be found as to their profession - or delayed flights. They and the unsavoury bunch pitted against them are untroubled by any kind of police attention despite the havoc they create fighting in hospital surgeries and smashing several thousands pounds worth of equipment, driving everywhere as though they were in a TV film, and killing folk in all many of unnatural ways.
Our British police, for example - no one calls them bobbies any more, by the way - might often be inefficient and just as corruptible as you and I, but I do suspect that when the wreckage of a lorry whose brakes have been tampered with is examined, even they would come across evidence of wrongdoing with admirable professionalism and set about finding out who was responsible, especially as one victim in the crash was the third former SAS officer to die in what seems like as many days, all of whom served in a particular and semi-legal spat in Oman; and especially as two nearby vehicles were seen to take off at speed just after the crash; and especially as the bodies of two men, both shot through the head, are found soon after by the abandoned vehicles. It's the kind of situation almost bound to spark the curiosity of your average British plod.
'Something's not quite right here, sergeant,' one astute cop will mutter to his deputy, 'I don't like it. I really don't like it at all. Better call in Scotland Yard.'
'But sir, we are Scotland Yard.'
'Yes,of course we are, sergeant, of course we are. Look I want a report on it all first think on Monday. And no excuses, hear me. I don't care how much your wife protests. This is serious.'
But I'm picking nits and realise quite well that all testosterone-charged adolescents from 14 to 60 (at which age the testosterone does come in a pill, however) will be blithely untroubled by the film's oddities. They will not give two figs for the grizzled old sheikh from central casting who looks like he trespassed onto the set from a different film, nor that his son is a one-dimensional smart lad straight from an Armani catalogue.
They will remain supremely indifferent to the true nature of the secretive group of seven or eight ageing businessmen who have, it would seem, nothing better to do, than meet at night in some secret location and upset the head honcho battling it out with our main hero on their behalf. Nor will they wonder why Her Majesty's Secret Service, which is behind the whole shooting match - the story, I mean, not making the film - is represented by just one man who is apt to meet his contact, another baddie, in obscure locations.
If this is your bag, go for it. You will certainly like it. If you want to be treated with just a little more intelligence you might care to look elsewhere.
It isn't bad, it just isn't, in the sense of making much sense, all that good. Jason Statham does what he is always good at i.e. being Jason Statham, Robert Deniro was obviously in behind on his mortgage payments, because he, too, puts in an appearance. Clive Owen is also in the mix showing us he is just as hard as Statham, and there is a blonde Aussie bird who worries about the man she loves - Statham - to eradicate any suspicion - there is, in fact, non at all - of homo eroticism. Tough men might like to beat six bells out of each other on an afternoon, but they still appreciate the love of a good woman. Altogether now: aaah!
Let me just say that in my opinion Jason Statham is my favorite actor, I don't know why some people are completely hating on this movie and the acting.
I agree with one point the came up in some reviews, you never really get to know the characters, they had the flash backs which were awesome, and I feel like they should have added a couple more
Many movies I recently watched I have been disappointed, but Killer Elite was awesome!
STATHAM NEEDS TO BE IN MORE MOVIES AND THEY NEED TO COME OUT FASTER ...one a week should be enough :P
Best of all, the filmmakers took the time to give these hard men just the right things to say - not catchphrases, just lines that smell of blood and gunpowder every time Statham, Owen or DeNiro utter them.
Yes, it is based on The Feather Men by British adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. The book tells the story of four British Army soldiers, including two members of the Special Air Service, who are assassinated by a hit squad known as "The Clinic". The murders are carried out over a 17-year period, on the orders of a Dubai sheikh whose son was killed by British forces in Oman during a battle with communist guerrillas. a5c7b9f00b
