After Irish-American brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus cheat death with the Russian mob a day after Saint Patrick's Day, the two decide to voluntarily stay overnight at a police station, where they receive what appears to be a message from God to rid Boston of all evil. Connor and Murphy, with the aid of their friend Rocco, set out on numerous campaigns to rid Boston of lowlifes and mafiosos, leaving behind a path of destruction. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Paul Smecker is assigned the task of investigating the aftermath of each mission conducted by the MacManus brothers and Rocco. The more pieces Smecker fits into the puzzle, the more he asks himself: Should he continue his job and possibly arrest the trio, or join them in their mission to destroy evil?
Two Irish brothers accidentally kill mafia thugs. They turn themselves in and are released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and start knocking off mafia gang members one by one. Willem Dafoe plays the detective trying to figure out the killings, but the closer he comes to catching the Irish brothers, the more he thinks the brothers are doing the right thing.
Imagine Batman and Superman were two Irish Catholics from Boston that sprayed their hapless, costume-free villains with bullets. That's "Boondock Saints," sort of a "Guy Ritchie meets vigilante justice" crime film that relishes in the cool rather than the real. Still, over- the-top as it may be at times, there's no denying "Boondock Saints" both its cool and cult status.
Connor and Murphy McManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) are a pair of Irish fraternal twins with unflinching faith and a lot of body art who after an attack on their favorite bar by Russian mobsters on St. Patrick's Day goes awry, realize they can rid Boston of its crime filth, fulfill a religious responsibility and make some money on the side by killing sinners. On their trail is arrogant and borderline crazy FBI detective Paul Smecker (Willam Defoe), known for accurately reconstructing crime scenes (as long as he has his classical music handy).
Once the McManus brothers go on their spree, the film takes an interesting approach, showing Smecker go through each crime scene and guess what happened before actually showing you what happened, increasing the suspense and getting across Smecker's frustration with how clean these guys manage to be.
Although the plot and style of the film is dominated by the McManus brothers and their not nearly as sharp or morally sound companion Rocco, character-wise, this film belongs to Defoe. In his strongest character maybe ever, Defoe's distinguished and inherently insane features work perfectly for a detective who is so smart he's nearly a lunatic. His performance is nuanced at times and over-the-top at others and while the other over-the-top parts of the film detract a bit from it, Defoe manages to make his ridiculousness work, namely the cool scene where director Troy Duffy films both Defoe constructing the scene and the Saints actually doing all that, together.
The film's greatest weakness is that it glorifies the vigilantism of the McManus brothers in a way that detracts from the realism. They become superheroes in almost too much of the sense of the word. Their clean kills and getaways, even their reception by the public (which is more told than shown) seems a bit too far-fetched. Even the symbolism is overdone with the twins' rosaries shaking on the wall pegs or thrashing about as they get beaten. The religious angle is highly controversial, but this is also the point. Never before has religion been a motivating factor in vigilantism in film. Still, the execution is more about style and entertainment than about the real possibility of these figures existing.
For those of you who liked Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs this film has it all and more. With an outstanding cast including William Defoe, this film includes great action sequences, subtle comedy, and an outstanding plot swirled together into one great film. If there is one film you see in your lifetime it has to be Boondock Saints.
(Duffy's) assembled a fine cast -- it's hard to take your eyes off the two young leads -- but he's given them little to do but squeeze triggers and mouth platitudes.
Although the film never explicitly states it, it's pretty clear that Agent Smecker is gay. The fact that he is intimate with another man in the film is pretty clear evidence. He also attends a gay bar for his drinking binge. However, this doesn't stop him from being rather belligerent towards other gay men and calling them 'fag' or 'fairy'. To put it simply the Unrated version features several extended action sequences and bloody shootouts that are missing in the R-rated version of the movie. You can find a detailed comparison between both versions with pictures here. Yes, he is their father. He knows the prayer that was passed down to them from their father and their father's father. He takes the 'In nómine Patris' part of the prayer, which means 'In the name of the Father.' The benediction he gives them (raising his hands in the sign of the cross over Murphy and Connor) is only appropriate for a priest...or a parent. Also, at the very end (after the courtroom scene), Connor calls him 'Da'. Il Duce was hired to kill the vigilantes, however, he didn't realize that they were his children, nor did Connor and Murphy realize that Il Duce was their father. It wasn't until Il Duce was about to ambush them at the end, when he overheard them saying their family prayer, that he obviously realized would be too much of a coincidence for someone else to know. Also, he knew he fathered twin sons; they just haven't seen each other for about 25 years. In the opening of the film, the brothers are in church praying when the priest begins talking about a victim named Kitty Genovese who was killed a long time ago in the middle of day and everyone watched but did not respond and about the indifference of good men towards evil. After hearing this, Connor states, "I do believe the monseigneur's finally got the point", to which Murphy responds, "Aye." Later on, its Saint Patrick's day and the brothers are at a bar drinking when three Russian gangsters come in and state that they will close the bar, but the brothers don't allow them, to which a fight begins between them, to which the Russians are left badly wounded. As the brothers rest in their apartment, the Russians come back and threaten the brothers. Connor is handcuffed to a toilet while Murphy is taken outside to be shot in the head. Connor, out of rage, breaks the toilet apart and throws it down the complex and hits the Russian, killing him. Connor jumps on the other Russian, to which Murphy finishes him off. The brothers go to the police station to prove that it was self-defense. Meanwhile, the police let them stay in a holding cell to avoid the media. While sleeping, water falls from the crack of the ceiling onto their bodies, symbolizing baptism and forgiven sin. The brothers realize this and say to each other, "Destroy that which is evil so that which is good may flourish." The brothers take the money and jewelry they took from the Russians they encountered and buy guns. Seeing all the sin that has went on, violence, drug use, rape, thievery, they swear that they will execute all evil men who have done sin in order that peace and goodness can be restored and evil can be stopped. On Murphy's hand it says "Veritas" meaning Truth and on Conner's hand it says "Aequitas" meaning Justice a5c7b9f00b
