A romanced story of Attila the Hun, from when he lost his parents in childhood until his death. Attila is disclosed as a great leader, strategist and lover and the movie shows his respect to the great Roman strategist Flavius Aetius, his loves and passions, the gossips, intrigues and betrayals in Rome, all of these feelings evolved by magic and mysticism. During the waning days of Roman Empire, the barbarian Huns are making their way toward Europe. A warrior named Attila violently assumes Hun leadership and unites the warring clans under his banner. But this is not enough for him, Attila seeks to form an empire, and he sees Rome, bristling under the leadership of the incompetent Caesar Valentinian , ripe for the picking. In an attempt to quell a Hun invasion, ambitious Roman General Flavius Aetius attempts to form an alliance with Attila against their mutual enemy, Visigoth King Theodoric. But this plan backfires, and it soon becomes clear that a violent showdown between all three armies awaits. The Attila story was done back in the Nineteen -Fifties, by Douglas Sirk, in a Jack Palance vehicle called Sign of the Pagan. All I know about the film is that Palance played Attila, and that it had a sumptuous, if slightly low-budget design. Of course, Sirk didnt have access to the sort of high-tech special effects available now. This was , on the whole an excellent film-a stirring epic. Powers Boothe, one of the great under-used actors of American Cinema, was superb as Aetius,a man with strict code of honor, combined with an almost Machiavellian ruthlessness. The actor who played the incredibly dull-witted Valentinian was very funny, and the great Tim Curry was an over- the -top Theodosius. Gerard Butler, I thought was good, playing Attila not simply a savage, but as a crafty, honorable barbarian LONGING for civilization. Pauline Lynch was delightful as Galen. Having said all these good thing about this film ( and I was really impressed by how they were able to recreate the battle of Chalons-a battle with supposedly half- a million men engaged- with a about a thousand Lithuanian Army regulars and mounted police.), Why do I give it a 9?One simple answer . It was only a two part mini series! One crucial character was missing from the story-Pope Leo!It was the Pope who persuaded Attila to turn waway from Rome AFTER Chalons. You see the film portrays the conflict as a dialectic between the "civilized" Roman Aetius ( who casually mentions his Christianity, and then does very little to suggest that he is a Christian), and The "Barbarian" Attila.the third term was missing from the equation-Leo. Then the film would have been about the Roman past, the Barbaric present, and the Christian future. BTW, this whole period is full of great potential for film-makers. Think of Augustines life as a film! I know, Rossellini once made a series for French TV about Augustines life,,how many people have seen it?What a great film it would make for Coppola or Scorsese! Who cares if Attila isn't accurate historically? Who cares if Powers Boothe's acting is stilted. Who cares if the costumes are "out of period?" The fabulous scenery is worth the watch. And so is watching that fantastic Scottish rogue, Gerard Butler, playing a powerful Attila. Wish that the real Attila was as sexy, fair, and fabulous as Gerard. The ladies are also good to look at, and do a credible job of acting. The young lady who plays the "witch" is unusual and quite interesting in her part.

The difference between life in Rome and life where Attila lives is striking. From cool marble hallways and communal baths to ragged huts and river baths, it makes you realize just how advanced Rome was in those days.

Gerard Butler, however, was the strength of the series. He has that rare quality that makes it difficult for most people to take their eyes off him. His eyes are chameleon's, changing from penetrating, to loving, to laughing, and back again. Sometimes brown, sometimes hazel, sometimes a stunning green, they appear to change with his moods.

This is an actor to watch. His star is definitely rising.
