In the future, humanity has constructed several space colonies. But the corrupt Treize and his organization Oz have manipulated the United Earth Sphere Alliance into controlling earth and its colonies with an iron fist. To counteract this extreme measure, rebel colonies launch Operation: Meteor; an attempt to smuggle Mobile Suits made of Gundanium alloy to earth to combat the corruption and free earth and the colonies from Oz's control. One of these "Gundams" is piloted by Heero Yuy, who is shot down and is forced to blend in to enemy society. Now up against social issues with a girl named Relena and Oz and its puppets, Heero must unite with other rebels and save his people.
In the year After Colony 195, Earth is surrounded by orbiting space colonies. The colonists are cruelly oppressed by the Earth Sphere Alliance, which uses huge humanoid fighting machines called "Mobile Suits" to control the populace. Behind this tyranny is the secret society called "Oz," which has infiltrated the Alliance military and steered it towards its repressive course. Now, the space colonies are ready to strike back. Five young pilots, equipped with advanced mobile suits called "Gundams," are sent to Earth to wage guerilla war against Oz and its Alliance puppets. The war to decide humanity's destiny begins...
I went into the Gundam Wing fandom for the pretty boys and got so much more than I expected. Despite that different elements seem to be taken from earlier Gundam shows, this is anime at its finest. The development of its characters stays away from cliche and gets you to really care about them. I've lost track of how many times I've watched this, and unlike other shows where after one time watching it I'm fine, I still sob like a baby every time I watch episode 25 (very, very depressing). Unlike other anime shows, you've got people in here who are really human and aren't fake. Instead of a Sailormoon sort of approach where you have the good guy and the bad guy, it's obvious who's who, the show stinks of philosophy in warfare. Thus leaving you to decide if Treize is doing the right thing or the wrong thing. You can debate for hours about this. Unfortunately, some of the characters can get a bit tedious after awhile, but the other stuff going on in the show keeps you occupied.
The reason why Gundam Wing probably got so much attention was because of a) the lookers and b)it's release on American TV. Even if it had just been released to video and DVD, it'd probably still get a lot of attention. This is also one of the few anime series out there that has a REALLY good dub. I'm talking Cowboy Bebop good. The original Japanese version has its charm, but everyone who worked on the English version put a lot of energy into their roles. It's a superb series, and I can't recommend it enough.
While being an impressionable youth when first experiencing the Gundam Wing series, upon re-watching the series, I have reconfirmed my belief that this series is not only beautifully animated, but the plot, the gundam design, character design, and character depth are masterfully executed. While at first appearing like a boy band of sorts, the stylish attractiveness of the characters can partly be credited to just great art, with individual personalities creating clear and endearing distinctions among the characters. Consequently, it is extremely easy to become to drawn to any particular character. Personally, I liked Heero because of his stoic personality. While I may be biased with a sentimental attachment of this show to my childhood, I can objectively say that Gundam Wing addresses the deeper questions of war and life in general (how can we obtain peace?) while providing action packed battles in large robot suits, which, to say the least, is excellent.
