In New York, the elder employee of the post-office, Hector Negron, goes on a rampage killing a client by shooting him with a Luger. The rookie reporter of the Daily News, Tim Boyle, follows the detectives that are investigating the case. They find the valuable head of the statue Primavera in his wardrobe. Tim decides to interview the catatonic Hector. Out of the blue, he starts talking about the 92nd Division "Buffalo Soldiers" in Tuscan, Italy, in World War II. Hector and three other soldiers - 2nd Staff Sergeant Aubrey Stamps, Sergeant Bishop Cummings and the slow Private First Class Sam Train - cross a river. However his company is destroyed by the German soldiers. While trapped in a village, Train rescues the eight year-old boy, Angelo Torancelli, who survived a massacre in St. Anna village, and they become connected to each other. As times go on, the platoon interacts with the villagers and Hector discloses a story of prejudice and betrayal in times of war. Set in 1944 Italy, the story of four black American soldiers who get trapped in a Tuscan village during WWII. This movie was a waste of nearly three hours. OK, we get it, Spike: Black people were treated like dirt during World War II just like they are now, right? This heavy-handed history lecture rubbed me the wrong way all the way through. I rented it because I'm a history buff and I am fascinated by WWII, but there wasn't much to like here. Lee made a jumbled mess of this historical fiction. It was disappointing to see him insert such crude stereotypes (the racist white commander, the fighting black brothers, the black-white sexual tension) in this piece. I guess he doesn't have much left to say, so he's saying all the same, old tired things again. By the way, I'm no expert, but isn't it unlikely that these footsoldiers - especially black solders - would be equipped with Browning automatic rifles instead of regular, single-shot bolt-action bolt rifles? Doesn't seem possible. From the moment I saw the trailer for Miricle at St. Anna, I thought it was going to be a great film. I came here onto IMDb to find a lot of negative reviews that shyed me away from seeing it, so I was kind of debating on seeing this film. I was also disappointed with Spike Lee's comments towards Clint Eastwood, I felt that the motive he had for this movie was misplaced. While the movie is a little too long, it's an incredibly powerful film, but once again we see too much of Spike Lee's view on racism. I think with a different director it could have had better tastes on the rough subject of what these soldiers had to go through. But I would say otherwise this was a very good movie and should have been given a better chance by the viewers. I agree completely that it was a little too long, don't mind the long movies at all, but the beginning is a little slow paced, but into the first hour it really starts to pick up and makes your body shake and fills your eyes with tears.

We open with a black man who seems to be very quiet and has probably an interesting story... he goes to his work and sees a man, all we get is "Oh, God, it's you..." and he shots this man in cold blood. The police and press go to his apartment to find the head of a statue from Italy that is practically priceless and when questioned, we find out that this man has the story of a life time. Back in WWII, he and other black soldiers are sent to Italy to fight the Nazi's. One of the soldiers finds a young Italian boy who can't speak one word of English, but they take him with, eventually staying with an Italian family who are frightened by the Nazi's and are becoming Facists. But as the soldiers grow together during this difficult time, they find out that the boy they found knows more than they could ever discover leading to a bloody battle and how one man could destroy so many lives.

Miricle at St. Anna is seriously a very good movie, if you do have the opportunity, I do recommend seeing it, just make sure you have the time, it's a long movie. Like I said, it does pull itself together for an extremely powerful ending. I was so speechless at the end of this movie, there were scenes that just completely got to me. We do see a lot of movies showing the violence of the Nazi's, but this will stand out with one of the most gut wrenching scenes I've ever witnessed with the Italian church and these innocent people who the Nazi's just slaughter. If Spike Lee would just be quiet about his views on racism and how he hates it when other directors don't include black actors or characters in their story, this movie would have better publicity, which is very sad. But like I said, it's a great movie, has powerful performances and a great setting with an inspiring story.

7/10 Even in a film that clocks in at a quasi-epic 2 hours and 40 minutes, that's just too much narrative. And matters aren't helped by the fact that Lee, who has never staged battle sequences before, hasn't quite got the rhythms or camera angles right. Miracle at St. Anna is also a 2003 novel written by American writer and musician James McBride. Those who have both read the book and the script say that several themes in the book have been enhanced for the movie. The supernatural aspect has been muted somewhat, but the religious Christian aspect has been made more pointed for characters on all sides—Bufflo Soldiers, Italians and Germans. Other details were also changed. For example, Hector didn't earn a purple heart but a silver star. Rudolfo recognizes the fact that he's going to get shot and doesn't seem to have come to terms with it. (In the book, he doesn't realize until the last second what's happening and is a little more OK with his fate.) Hector barely ever looks at who comes up to the window. In the book, he looks, notices a flashy ring, and then looks to see whose face it is. (This is important to the story because it is this small detail that makes the viewer/reader realize that the Black Butterfly has exacted his revenge from beyond the grave.) The movie's script seems to draw out a sex scene that was only referenced in the book. a5c7b9f00b
