The 1942 battles of the Coral Sea and Midway island are retold through the points of view of both sides. When an audacious US air raid reaches Japan itself, Combined Fleet commander Isoroku Yamamoto orders seaborne invasions of Port Moresby in the southwestern Pacific and of Midway Island near Hawaii, invasions that Yamamoto hopes will smoke out the US Pacific Fleet for destruction before the full might of US war production can kick in. The Japanese are supremely confident of victory over the vastly outnumbered US fleet, but they are unaware that US Navy intelligence has cracked the Imperial Navy's codes, allowing the US to deploy aircraft carriers to maximum counteroffensive effect.

Not a patch on Tora!Tora!Tora! in production values or anything else for that matter. I watched it for the first time since its release in 1976 and didn't realise how bad it was. Shoddy production values,crappy sets, wooden acting, mistakes galore, but I loved the ending with the couple of hundred extras they rounded up to stand on the dock watching the carrier still dressed it seemed in their 1976 clothes! As if they would let them all anywhere near a naval base in the Pacific in 1942 anyway!
An enjoyable and informative movie about the Battle of Midway which attempts to keep to the facts. The main problem with the movie are the continuity errors. I can accept the use of different types of aircraft for the battle scenes even if the types are not strictly accurate in some cases. What is more jarring is when the aircraft taking off is different from the one landing when it is supposed to be the same aircraft. This confuses all viewers of the movie and is simply sloppy film making. There is a smattering of unnecessary footage thrown in that dilutes some of the movie's impact. Overall the movie is quite entertaining but not quite up to the standard of Tora Tora Tora.
