Entrusted with the task of spotting any potential terrorists and chemical specialists who try to get a visa, Kate Abbott, the genius newly-recruited security officer at the U.S. Embassy in London, senses there's something off with the Romanian doctor, Emil Balan; however, her concerns are dismissed by her boss. But, then, after a devastating bombing attack in the heart of the city, Kate will surprisingly find herself in the spotlight and on the wrong side of the law, while at the same time, targeted by the international assassin known only as the Watchmaker. Can Kate unearth the conspiracy and make it in one piece before a new act of terrorism strikes the metropolis?
A State Department employee newly posted to the American embassy in London is charged with stopping terrorists from getting into the U.S. That puts her right in the line of fire and she is targeted for death and framed for crimes. Discredited, she is forced to go on the run while she tries to clear her name and stop a large-scale terrorist attack set for New Year's Eve in Times Square.
I am a fan of spy action films so with the cast involved in survivor I decided that I would give it a watch and we'll for the most part I feel like I have waisted an hour and a half of my life. The premise of this film sees a member of the US embassy security framed for a murder and have to go on the run from one of the best assassins in the world and stop a nuclear attack. Now Mila jovovich is a pretty well known female action star and she does a fine job in this film and I have absolutely no problem with her leading a film like this. But this film gives us absolutely no information on her character and go be honest never really gives us a reason to care about her character. Even when she is being hunted down I never felt that I would be really upset if she died, I would have just felt nothing really because of the way they make the character look. Now the biggest positive in the film is the performance of pierce brosnan as the villain the watchmaker, his character is like if bond finally lost his mind and turned into an assassin. He was just a really cool character and had some funny lines even though his character motivations are left mostly shrouded. Dylan McDermott is in this film and at first I thought he was pretty generic but as you see the film progress and how much he wants to help jovovich you start to like him, even though at a point in the film they just completely forget about him. Angela Bassett is in the film incredibly briefly and her character just came off as stupid and not somebody that you would care to work for. Also the rest of the supporting cast weren't given enough to go with so they could become interesting. I knew from the very first scene in the film that the story would suck and do you know what the story does indeed suck. It just tries to be really overcomplicated and take loads of twists and turns that were just incredibly unnecessary. Also there is hardly any resolution with any of the characters and you won't care or know anything about their motivations at the end of the film. This film should have just played it safe like the first taken film and it could have been really good but it just fails. The script actually has some laughs all from brosnan but it also lacked allot to it to once again make you care about the characters which you will never do in this film. There were a couple of cool action scenes which I have nothing to complain about but they lacked any narrative to go with them and sometimes the quick editing hurts as you don't know what happens to curtain characters. Overall this film isn't terrible but it is below average and not worth seeing unless you want to see a really cool pierce brosnan performance.
A good cast, a taut plot and some fun action scenes makes this a likable enough spy thriller. Unfortunately, this entire plot has been done many times before. The single bureaucrat who discovers a plot only to be framed and have to go on the run, has been done to death. Pierce Brosnan and Milla Jovovich are game enough and almost lift this little thriller above the fray.
Jovovich is Kate Abbot, an American security employee working in the London embassy approving passports. She stumbles on to several questionable application approvals and is told to "leave it alone" by her superior, Bill (Robert Forster). When all of her fellow visa co-workers are killed during a bomb blast at a local restaurant, Kate manages to survive by luck. She then runs into Brosnan's hitman, The Watchmaker, who tries to kill her. She goes on the run and circumstances make it appear she is involved. She then has to clear her name and uncover the next terrorist attack.
Its pretty standard fare, but the two leads elevate it. Seeing Brosnan as a villain is refreshing after his stint as Bond. Jovovich does a nice job as the innocent office worker forced into extraordinary circumstances. Dylan McDermott is a bright spot as the head of Kate's department. Angela Basset appears as the American Ambassador and does one dimensional stuff like yell at everyone to "clean this up." Her career has really gone down the tubes.
The plot has some serious holes blown in it (haha, see what I did there?). Brosnan's Watchmaker is supposed to be an expert assassin, but he can't shoot straight in the chase scenes to save his life. If you can ignore how incompetent the London police are and the almost unbelievable way Kate manages to extricate herself from different situations, its a fun ride. Just don't think about what is happening too hard.
A sturdy wrong-woman thriller that feels grotesque in its citations of 9/11 and other intimations of real-world import, but also steals a few good moves from “North by Northwest” and “The Fugitive” for a solid middle section.
