It is 1944 and the Allied Armies stand ready for a major invasion of Germany from bases in England. As a prelude to D-Day, US Army Intelligence orders a top secret mission where convicted criminals will be offered a pardon in return for parachuting into the Reich on a suicide mission.
US army Major John Reisman, based in London, is an inventive man who often thinks outside the box which causes many problems in the structured military. But it is because of this mentality that in March 1944, he is assigned, or as his superiors put it volunteers for a near suicide mission. Prior to the Allied forces invading continental Europe, he and his team, who he will train personally with Sergeant Bowren as his second in command, will infiltrate a highly fortified and guarded French château being used by the Nazis as respite house and meeting place primarily for high ranking German officers, kill as many of the officers as possible and take out the communications tower. His squad will consist of twelve of the most heavily sentenced GI convicts, many whose sentence is death. Reisman, who doesn't like the assignment because of the involvement of the convicts, adds one caveat to doing this job: that the convicts have their sentences commuted if they survive. Reisman quickly learns that besides a resentment to authority, the twelve convicts are a disparate group, each with their own button issues and motivations. Reisman not only has to get them to cooperate, but work as a team, which includes having a zero tolerance policy for the group as a whole on issues such as escape attempts while under his command. Even if he can achieve these goals, Reisman also faces the obstacle of Colonel Everett Breed, who is the antithesis of Reisman and who will be at the parachute training base at the same time as Reisman's squad, for which Breed has disdain.
Although it was considered to be a pretty ground-breaking movie in its time, today it comes across as over-long, predictable, and formulaic.
The story premises that a bunch of criminals can be trained to commit slaughter behind enemy lines. Quite why such a dangerously rebellious team would be considered more fit for a stealthy mission than specialised outfits is never made clear. And really; the disbelief begins there.
Once selected, they are trained in various techniques. About three-quarters of the movie (I never actually timed it) is dedicated to this whipping-them-into-a-team business. It's far too long and discursive. We don't actually see much of the training, just vignettes. There's also a lengthy war-games episode where they get to prove their worth.
Along the way there are plenty of little gags with humorous twists of military music lending it the flavour almost of a comedy drama. 'Kelly's Heroes' comes to mind.
The cast contains some of Hollywood's top drawer. Lee Marvin, Ernie Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Robert Ryan, Telly Savalas and many more give decent turns for their money. The script isn't too bad either. Otherwise the mission is just another standard juvenile shoot-em-up. The Nazis are - as usual - arrogant and stupid (you wonder how they managed to conquer Europe). The 'Dirty Dozen' get winnowed down to one. Curiously, one of the stockade MP guards also goes on the mission. Did he volunteer? For a fantasy war-time actioner, it doesn't get close to 'The Guns Of Navarone', 'Where Eagles Dare', or the already mentioned 'Kelly's Heroes'. It's got more in common with 'The Wild Bunch'.
As to the mission itself: Herding a large group of German Army Officers along with their wives & girlfriends into a cellar and incinerating them alive with gasoline would surely amount to a war-crime by any reasonable evaluation. It's outrageous, scarcely any different from what the Nazis did to the Jews. Sadly, it also typifies the inveterate sense of western moral superiority that has dogged its international relations for so many decades. We are in the right so we can do as we like.
If you haven't yet seen this movie then it's well worth a look. But far more tense or humorous, intelligent and believable wartime actioners both fantasy or otherwise are out there, not least the three just mentioned.
Classic WW2 movie that entertains like a very good comic book (Hollywood) yet also has a controversial public message/expose in it's illustration of how the USA also has to compromise with the devil for a long term good.The dirty tactics employed here by the USA military is very true and important in order to win the war.Good study on the begginings of SPECIAL FORCES WARFARE which of coarse border on TERRORISM.This movie is effective in tackling that sensitive aspect of all out warfare.Terrorism has to be fought with terrorism if needed.There is no pure good or pure evil on this world.In such an existence, clear and defined COMPROMISE,no matter how high the price must be done.Very good war movie.It's only weakness is it's only semi-realistic script/screenplay so as not to over threaten the mainstream movie fan.Fan of macho action WW2 movies? This one is for you then.......

U.S. Army Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin) is "asked" by General Worden (Ernest Borgnine) to train a dozen hardcore military prisoners, some of them sentenced to death by hanging, so that they can be led on a dangerous mission, called "Project Amnesty", behind enemy lines. In return for their service, the prisoners will have their sentences commuted ...if they survive. The Dirty Dozen is also a 1965 novel by E.M. "Mick" Nathanson, said to be inspired by the Filthy Thirteen, a real life Demolition Section of the U.S. Army whose job it was to demolish enemy targets behind the lines. The book was adapted for the movie by Nunnally Johnson and Lukas Heller. A sequel, The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission (1985), followed in 1985. To parachute into France, infiltrate a guarded French château in Rennes, Brittany, being used by high-ranking German officers as a rest house, kill as many Germans as possible, and destroy the communications tower in an effort to disrupt their chain of command before the Allied invasion on 6 June 1944. It's evident in the movie that Colonel Breed (Robert Ryan) and Major Reisman greatly dislike each other, but no details about their backstory is provided. It's explained in the book that the mutual contempt between them began in Italy. Reisman, an OSS officer, was working undercover with local partisans in Italy and had observed Breed's arrogant and dismissive treatment of the paratroopers under his command. Reisman, dressed as an Italian peasant, had seen Breed order his men out of a small cafe in which some of the troopers had stopped to have a drink. Reisman broke character and called Breed out for the jerk he was in English, telling him that he ought to give his guys a break and let them drink because tomorrow some of them might be dead. The pompous Breed, embarrassed in front of his men, was furious and had Reisman arrested and held until his identity was confirmed. Those were pencil detonators aka timing pencils, basically pens with blasting caps and short-duration timers, settable by turning. Reisman signals to Jefferson that it's time. Jefferson tosses live grenades down the ventilation shafts as quickly as possible, knowing that he has only 20 seconds to join Reisman, Wladislaw, Franco, and Sgt Bowren () in the German half-track before the grenades begin exploding. He almost makes it but is shot and killed by a German soldier. As the grenades start exploding, Reisman heads the half-track out of the courtyard and over a bridge. Sawyer and Lever, who have been serving as lookouts, head for a boat to meet Reisman on the other side of the river but they are shot by Germans and their boat blown up. The half-track makes it across the river, and Franko begins shouting, "We made it!" Suddenly, a German solder steps out from under the bridge and shoots him in the back. The half-track continues its escape, carrying Reisman, Bowren, and Wladislaw, the only one of the dirty dozen to survive, a narrator states: Among the many reports of the raid on the château near Rennes, perhaps the most objective is the one by General Worden in which he states, "We are recommending that those members of the group known as the Dirty Dozen who survived this operation should have their service records amended to indicate that they are returning to duty at their former ranks and that the next of kin of those prisoners who were killed be advised that they lost their lives in the line of duty." In the final scene, Reisman, Wladislaw, and Bowren are recuping at a military hospital. They are visited by Generals Worden and Denton (Robert Webber) to commend them on a job well done. Just before leaving, Denton says to Wladislaw, "Hurry up and get well...we need men like you out there."
