In a small town in California, the chief of police Jeff Talley is facing relationship problems with his teenager daughter. One year later, he was the prime police negotiator in Los Angeles, but after an unsuccessful negotiation, he gave-up his position and decided to move with his family to a calmer life. When three punks invade the house of Walter Smith, a wealthy accountant, and jeopardize his family, holding them hostage, Jeff's family is abducted by powerful criminals to force him to retrieve a DVD with bank accountings' information kept in Walter's office. Jeff Talley, a former LAPD hostage negotiator, has moved himself away from his failed career outside of Los Angeles, and away from his wife and daughter when three perpetrators move in on an unsuspecting family. But the family's father has a secret which might compromise his kin, and one of the criminals is about to jump over the edge. Jeff Talley has to get everybody to survive the night......if he can. I know this is weird, but my favorite opening credits are Conspiracy Theory, Sin City, Superman (Richard Donner), and now Hostage. I have been known to pop a DVD out of my tray after viewing the opening credits. (If a filmmaker is lazy on the credits, how well do you think the rest of the film can be?) It isn't always the case, but it holds some weight. For instance when you hear the first cords of Star Wars, and see those Yellow CAPS, you know your in for a space adventure. I can appreciate the way the opening titles can lure you into a film. Pump you up or give you a glimpse of the style the film will have. HOcredits reminds me of Sin City. Did anyone else think the style was similar to Sin City? Also does anyone else have and credit Faves? The style which brings you into the Movie. Also Pulp Fiction has to be up there too,when that guitar riff starts blaring I still get psyched to this day! The acting of Ben Foster I actually found to be of a really high standard. I love watching this young man change from character to character through all of the diverse characters he has played in his future. I found his character explored a lot of personal emotions and he added an extra element to the whole storyline and cast. Everyone is free to have their own opinion on the movie and the actors abilities and I respect that. I just want someone to acknowledge this young actors work as I think he is a rising star!!! The entire cast I think work well with each other and their talent bounces off each other. At first i didn't think i would enjoy this movie as I am not really into action films. However after seeing the actors input and abilities in this film, I really enjoyed it, sitting on the edge of my seat all the way through. My new theory is that Willis' own aesthetic soul is more old-world than he knows, and that he works best with directors who either are (Luc Besson) or might as well be (M. Night Shyamalan) European.
