Master Chief and the Arbiter must join together to attack the Covenant and destroy the Flood. Master Cheif returns to a Covenant Dominated Earth on a mission to kill the final alien leader. Meanwhile, the Arbiter, Johnson, and Keyes form a loose alliance and escape from Delta Halo. The Covenant is ripped in civil war, and the Elites along with a handful of other alien races become sympathetic to the human cause. Delta Halo's impromptu dis-activation has brought all of the Halos to a "remote activation phase". They can be activated from a facility called the ark, which happens to be on Earth. It was only recently that I played the original Halo; the game had come out in the generation I skipped and when I eventually rejoined gaming with the 360, I had all the shooters I needed with COD4 and anything I saw of Halo was of a multiplayer with big beasts that seemed to take a lot of hits to die – basically it never appealed to me. I loved the first game and due to a broken disk of Halo 2 which kept dying midway into the campaign, jumped right into Halo 3. The graphics were a nice change from the original Halo (even the updated version) and although I missed the final half of Halo 2, the story was not too hard to pick up since essentially the players are all the same.

The gameplay is a lot of fun – more than I expected. The world terrains are large with nice open areas where you have options in terms of the fight and where you can see others battling with you or alongside you. I started the game on Heroic and found the game to be perhaps a bit too challenging to be fun for a casual player such as myself. On Normal setting it is perhaps a bit too easy but it still has a challenge – you cannot hold the trigger while running forward. The flow of enemy and the structure of levels is really good and I continued to be forced to use all sorts of weapons since ammo is not always readily available for any one weapon. The use of music and the large cinematic landscapes produce great moments but also a real sense of excitement; the best example is the final level, which is a drive against the clock like the first game, however this time the clock is not real but a warning triggered by progress – so not a real heart-in-mouth race, but it is exciting and the urgency helped by the scale of the surroundings and the music. The cut- scenes are not overly used but when they are they add to the cinematic feel, being dramatic and looking very good – the only thing I think they did badly was the ending as it is misleading and doesn't make too much sense unless you sit through all the credits (which we all know we should but nobody does); it would have been better to deliver it all properly. Otherwise it is generally a very well put together game though.

The downside of it is that the game is not as long as I would have liked – it is plenty fun while I played but even for someone only grabbing a few hours every few evenings, it was done quite quickly. The reason for this I assume was the multiplayer experience being the bigger part of the sale. For me I don't pay for Gold to play online, so I cannot comment on that – but for the very low price I was able to pick this up for, I felt the solo campaign was more than good enough on its own – shortness aside.

A strong game then – even some 6 years later it stands up very well. Very glad I checked the franchise out at last and I'll probably carry on with the next game at some point. Halo 3, the most extremely over-hyped game of 2007, has been released, and my, my, is it a disappointment.

Those buying it for the multiplayer will obviously now have something to complain about. The mêlée system is ridiculous, the player can take a ridiculous amount of bullets even with the sniper rifle and RPG, and headshots don't do a darn thing.

Now with the actual campaign gameplay. One of my friends once said "Do you want to spend an hour getting killed (Call of Duty) or spend it killing someone (Halo)?". That sums up Halo 3. Your assault rifle takes two clips to kill any of the moderately stronger enemies and it takes half a clip to kill the cannon fodder. I mean, what in the name of all the Canadian provinces were Bungie thinking? If you want to contribute to Bungie's greedy success, buy this. If you want to play something better, buy The Orange Box or Left 4 Dead. At least they're developed by smart guys (Valve). During the course of the story and in the announcement trailer, Chief recieves broadcasts from Cortana while she's under the influence of the Gravemind, which led many fans to think the AI was corrupted or rampant. However, these versions of Cortana are copies and damaged files. Cortana herself is not evil. Official press release shows Halo 3 to have earned over $170 million, becoming the biggest single-day sales event in entertainment history, until the release of Grand Theft Auto 4.

http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/09/26/it-s-official-quot-halo-3-quot-registers-biggest-day-in-us-entertainment-history.aspx It is very possible. While Bungie did leave Microsoft, Microsoft owns the rights to the Halo name and universe, so there will never be a Halo game on any other system. However, Bungie still retains the rights for their Marathon franchise (the precursor and story basis for Halo), and it seems likely that they will do a Marathon remake at some point in time. They did say that little will actually change and they still plan to work almost exclusively with Microsoft and their consoles, but being independent means they they will not only see a bigger share of the return on sales, but they will be free to work on whatever they wish and are not obliged to continue the Halo franchise. But there is talks of a new Halo project. This new Halo project is going to be a new trilogy and Peter Jackson will do some of the work on it, supposedly. As for Halo 4, the story did end with Master Chief lost in space. So there may be another Halo game leaving off with this one. Only time can tell now what Bungie will do.

It is worth noting that since Microsoft does own the Halo name and story, they could have another developer make a new Halo game, much like Bioware and Obsidian did with the two Knights Of The Old Republic and Neverwinter Nights games.

Halo Reach will be a prequel to Halo (2001). After Halo Reach, the Halo series will be over.

The above statement is no longer the case. The series is now being taken over by 343 Industries. At the E3 convention, they officially announced Halo 4. A page on Xbox.com has been set up.
