In the fourth and final installment of the Arkham Series, Bruce Wayne sets out into the night once again to thwart the plans of Scarecrow, Harley Quinn and Two-Face when they're supplied with weapons from the Penguin in their attempt to hunt the Knight and take his head. With his back against the wall, Batman turns to his closest allies to help him save Gotham City from the clutches of Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight's army. A familiar face also returns to give The Dark Knight a message he cannot ignore. Prior to the unexpected critical success of the "Arkham" franchise, video games of the superhero genre were often subjected to a negative reputation with very few titles giving the implication of understanding the appeal established by the source material.

2009's Arkham Asylum defied all expectations, integrating innovative game mechanics with a compelling atmosphere that confirmed the potential superhero titles had.

The subsequent installment, 2011's Arkham City, expanded upon the the original formula with enhanced gameplay, a more elaborate range of adversaries and numerous time consuming side missions and collectibles.

2013's Arkham Origins, while less impactful than its predecessors, was a worthy successor with the best boss fights in the franchise, an intriguing but often disjointed narrative and while not the best in terms of graphics, was arguably the most stylistic with its Christmas theme and its use of color palletes.

With the announcement Rocksteady was helming the final installment, as they did with "Asylum" and "City", I was hardly skeptical.

Initially, I had complete faith that "Arkham Knight" would be a satisfying conclusion to the acclaimed franchise.

A variety of Easter eggs found in "City" gave the indication what would be playing pivotal events in the final installment. The hints of Scarecrow's return, the aftermath of the Joker's death, even the side missions, notably Azrael and Hush, promised so much for the future of the franchise.

And from the perspective of a fan of the entire franchise, I can honestly say "Arkham Knight" is the worst game in the entire series.

To clarify any misconception, that is not to say I hated the game. I genuinely regard "Arkham Knight" as being a good game.

But for this game to be acknowledged as only "good", as opposed to the groundbreaking feats of the previous titles, it is overall an underwhelming and disappointing conclusion.

The inclusion of the batmobile received anticipation as being a highlight of the game. That anticipation gradually dissolved into the realization on how much the batmobile was being emphasized.

The tank battles were tediously repetitive and consisted a significant portion of the game's run-time. They gradually became redundant and would have preferably had the entire concept scrapped in exchange for a more compelling narrative, which brings me to the next subject.

The game has some memorable, emotional and often psychological moments that often serve as redeeming qualities for the game's thin narrative. Notably interactions with Batman and Barbara are some of the most compelling aspects of the game's narrative. There are implications on how Batman is coping with the Joker's death. The most riveting moments of the game however, is the internal conflict with Joker. An unexpected and subtle return from Mark Hamill, while unnecessary, made for some psychological warfare that validated the ideals of Batman and Joker, as well as their similarities.

But for the main premise itself, consisting of the underdeveloped plot lines of Scarecrow spreading fear toxin across Gotham and the Arkham Knight's grudge against Batman, I was not invested.

Scarecrow was the highlight of "Arkham Asylum", but his presence in "Arkham Knight" had no tension, no payoff and his return to the franchise was underwhelming. Stylistically, he looks phenomenal, and his portrayal by John Noble was brilliant voice acting. Towards the end of the game, there were finally some great scenes with Scarecrow. His moments of superiority against Batman, during his mask removal, was exactly what was absent from the remainder of the game. Had he been a more substantial role in the game, it would have worked. But those brief moments are far few in between, with all the unnecessary focus on the titular character himself, Arkham Knight.

He is really what killed the game for me. The initial intrigue of a new and original character was wasted with the inclusion of the Jason Todd story arc. It honestly seemed shoehorned in for not-so- subtle fan-service. The pretentious and predictable reveal of the Arkham Knight turning out to be Jason Todd was laughably cliché, but also irrelevant to the main premise.

The gallery of rogues, as promised in the promotional trailers, would have served as a more investing approach. Yet every single character promised to be featured in the game were reduced to simplistic and forgettable side quests.

Even the gameplay gives the impression of the franchise stepping down. There is a sincere lack of boss fights in the entire game. As stated previously, the batmobile was hardly used sparingly. The stealth and combat mechanics are still fun segments, but aside from the inclusion of new enemy types and the fear takedown, it didn't feel very innovative.

The graphics are stunning, the character detail is impressive and the city, while not visually consistent with the previous titles as it looks less authentic and more modern, is still rich in its attention to detail.

To much irony, the expansion side mission of Ra's Al Ghul was more intriguing than the main game itself, and felt unfortunate that it was not the direction they took.

With definite redeeming qualities, Arkham Knight is a slightly above average experience and overall fulls short compared to the impact of "Asylum" and "City". Batman Arkham Knight is the concluding chapter of Rocksteady's Batman Arkham trilogy. It is a great time to be a Batman fan because not only does he have the best movies (The Dark Knight Trilogy), he has the best games as well (Arkham Trilogy).

Arkham Asylum was great and Arkham City was even better and I couldn't wait to try this part out. I held out this long due to the PC port issues but just couldn't wait anymore.

What I Liked: Being made from the ground up for current gen consoles, the game looked STUNNING. Detailed character models, environments and HOLY HELL DEM RAIN EFFECTS. It all looked really beautiful.

Very well directed and cinematic cut scenes.

Main story had some really great moments. Especially the final part, it was pure perfection, couldn't have asked for a better last mission/area.

Just like the previous parts, mostly great voice acting all round. Scarecrow was a great villain. Felt powerful, threatening and had great voice acting that sold his presence perfectly.

Finally we were able to free roam in Gotham City. And it was meticulously created in accordance with Rocksteady's vision of this world. Was fairly large too.

Improvements and additions to an already great combat and detective mechanics made for the best gameplay in the franchise and truly put you in Batman shoes.

Some added improvements in roaming mechanics made gliding through the city a real treat.

Batmobile had fun arcade-y driving and made you feel really powerful. It was a major addition fully integrated in the game instead of just being a gimmick.

Riddler side mission with Catwomen had fun puzzles where you had to work together with either catwomen or your batmobile.

Parts of the game where your allies joined you in a fight were great. The seamless transition from Batman to your ally in the fight made for exciting and fun combat.

What I didn't liked: Arkham Knight, the villain in the friggin title, was a huge disappointment. Not only was I able to figure out who he was way before the major reveal, he was just sorta there instead of feeling a proper force to be reckoned with. And he sometimes felt like a whiny brat.

Story had uneven pacing and often dragged on.

Batmobile was a double edged sword. The tank fight missions were fun at first but boy oh boy did they get so tedious later on and I was really bored with them. And the game just kept throwing them at you till the end.

Riddler's riddles with Batmobile race tracks were so annoying.

Very few boss fights and almost all of them were underwhelming or disappointing. What's worst, some of the most important ones were with batmobile.

Most side missions of iconic super villains were nothing more then rinse and repeat tasks till you finish them all and have a mediocre boss battle instead of proper story arcs.

Very few areas where you tag team with an ally.

PC port is very poor. Rocksteady outdid Ubisoft here.

Arkham City remains by favourite Arkham game. This game wasn't perfect but the good far outweighed the bad and overall, it was a pretty good end to the trilogy and was great at making you feel like batman. Since Rocksteady is done with him, I hope they use their superhero game making expertise to create a Superman game or some other hero.

8.5/10 Its not even a year. Arkham Knight takes place 9 months after the events of Arkham City. It is, as far as Rocksteady is concerned. After this, they probably want to move on to other game series and begin new franchises. If any future Arkham games are made, they will most likely be done by Warner Games Montreal, who made Arkham Origins. No. Rocksteady has opted to go with its own writing staff to finish the story. Prior to the game's final mission, Batman realizes he must surrender himself to Scarecrow to save Robin and Jim. However, if you don't do it, then nothing happens. You can continue the game as normal, the story mode just won't end until you surrender. Plus, every now and then Scarecrow will come on the PA to taunt Batman. Villains: The Scarecrow, The Arkham Knight, Two-Face, The Penguin, The Riddler, Harley Quinn. Firefly, Professor Pyg, Deathstroke, Deacon Blackfire, and Man-Bat.

Allies: Gordon, Oracle, Officer Cash, Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman and Azrael

Also Poison Ivy sides with Batman, though it's as a tentative truce. She ends up sacrificing herself and dies saving Gotham from the Scarecrow's toxins

The Joker returns as a voice inside Batman's head as well as a series of hallucinations throughout the game. He "helps" Batman along the way, offering clues and insight Yes. Joker is in the game and in a large way. Though he's not alive, he is inside Batman's mind due to the effects of his blood still being inside Batman after the events in Arkham City. He shows up constantly throught out the game, talking to Batman and commenting on the events going on....

EDIT He don't see the Joker because of Jokers blood, but because of Cranes toxin. He is infected by the toxin in the beginning of the game, when he tries to save Gotham from the toxin Jason Todd. The game claims he became Red Hood after the events of it had ended. He initially took on a different persona and went after Batman, believing that Batman never cared about him and simply replaced him entirely. During the events of the game he was a supervillain with the goal of killing Batman and everyone he loves. Only at the end of it he changes his mind and becomes a vigilante, although, unlike Batman, he is willing to kill. a5c7b9f00b
