Sing is a skilled Shaolin kung fu devotee whose amazing "leg of steel" catches the eye of a soccer coach. Together they assemble a squad of Sing's former Shaolin brothers, inspired by the big-money prize in a national soccer competition. Using an unlikely mix of martial arts and newfound soccer skills, it seems an unbeatable combination until they face the dreaded Team Evil in the ultimate battle for the title.
A shaolin kung-fu practitioner seeks a way to spread the word about his chosen art when he meets a down-on-his-luck lame ex-footballer (a.k.a. soccer player) who trains him and his five dejected brothers to play, incorporating their specialized martial arts skills. They form a team and soon enter a prestigious tournament with a one million dollar prize, eventually facing an unscrupulous rival coach and his drug-enhanced players.
After a fateful mistake costing his career, an ex-soccer player bum meets a shaolin kung fu student trying to spread the word of kung fu. The ex-soccer player helps reconcile with his five brothers, and teaches them soccer, adding shaolin kung fu as a twist.
If you like action films, this is a very good one. It has exhilarating special effects and great kung fu action! If you want to watch a very funny satirical movie, this is also a very good one. The jokes are very funny and clever.
Basically, this movie is really good mixing both the humor and action making this one of the best movies ever made. It has great dialog with good acting by Stephen Chow and Zhao Wei.
This is a film that is emotional, very funny, and a really good action film. If you like any of that, watch it and you'll love it because it's a classic!
'Shaolin Soccer' is a film probably unlike you have ever seen, it is goofy fun, totally ridiculous, but entertaining all the way through. Discussing the plot would be as silly as the film itself, but I will say a couple of things to give you an idea. The soccer competition is in the hand of one man named Hung (Yin Tse). He leads a team called Team Evil, winning the competition every year. Now Golden Leg Fung (Man Tat Ng), a man made cripple by Hung a long time ago, ensembles his own team which exists out of Shaolin kung-fu fighters, lead by Sing (Stephen Chow). There is also a girl involved, of course.
What you can expect is a lot of fun and funny moments. To give you an example, Sing can kick the ball so hard he can disable four opponents with one shot. Other can defy gravity the way the characters did it in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. From time to time the ball changes into a ball of fire, causes strong winds or the earth to tremble. Of course the Shaolin team will face Team Evil in the final game and of course it is a big surprise who will win. What does it matter? By then you have laughed a lot, you have seen some pretty images, you are really entertained.
If you're looking for substance in a Hong Kong movie, stick with Wong Kar-wai ("In the Mood for Love"). But if brainless, predictable fun will do, check out Shaolin Soccer.
Basically there are three different versions around. First of all one has to differentiate between the original Hong Kong Theatrical Version and the Director's Cut. The latter features two extended scenes and some outtakes before the end credits and runs approx. 10 minutes longer than the Theatrical Version.
There's also an International Cut available that runs more than 20 minutes shorter than the Asian versions. More than a 100 scenes were altered. At the end of the movie, Team Shaolin defeated Team Evil and won the championship. Sing's cyclone kick scored the winning goal. This can be clearly seen on the scoreboard during the final Trophy ceremony. Although many people believe Team Evil was leading 1-0 prior to Sing's cyclone kick, this is also not true.
