A group of archaeologists become trapped in the past when they go there to retrieve a friend. The group must survive in 14th century France before they can escape back to the 21st Century.
A group of archaeologists and combat experts led by Paul Walker and Frances O'Connor use a "3-D fax machine" (so much for technobabble!) to time-travel back to France in 1357, in hopes of retrieving Walker's father and returning safely to the present. No such luck. Fending for themselves against marauding hordes of medieval French warriors at war with the invading British, these semi-intrepid travelers find their body count rising, and the deadline for their return home is rapidly approaching.
I rented this movie knowing that is it based on a Michael Crichton book. The Movie was somewhat entertaining if you could get past the acting. The sets and the costumes were done well and the battle scenes were plausible. However if you read the book there is so much more to explore with the characters and the action. This book was written so it could be a movie. Ten years down the road this should be remade for justice sake. A mini series on could be in order because of the additional scenes that would be needed. And no I am not naive, I know that in any adaptation sacrifices must be made but I feel that because they got a big name to play Chris the centered the movie around him when it is clearly better balanced in the book. I am not a book snob but I saw so much potential in this concept that I felt that the movie was unfinished. That is why I read the book. Judge for your self.
This film is so incredibly bad that it is difficult to avoid laughing all the way through - not many comedies manage that, so it might be worth seeing if you can tolerate that sort of thing.
The plot is contradictory where it isn't nonsensical, the acting is deplorably bad, an infant school play would inject more realism into the characters.
The film is, sadly, highly racialistic. It attacks one group of people in numerous snide and unpleasant ways - if I were politically correct, I would urge that it was banned just for its racism.
The utter nonsense of having French villagers a few centuries ago understanding modern Yank argot beggars belief.
If a script like this can be made into a film it is difficult to imagine just how utterly awful those are that don't make it.
Glorious so-bad-it's-good entertainment.
There are 10 people who traveled in time; this is what happened to each of them:
Chris, Kate & Chris' father, prof. Johnston all make it back to 2003 safely.
Frank Gordon: Gets a sword in the chest from De Kere and is left for dead when he is cut loose from the wagon.
François: Gets killed by one of Lord Olliver's aides-de-camps; also via a sword in the chest (They think he's a spy sent by Lord Arnaud).
Gomez: Gets too many arrows in his chest from an English archer as soon as the group gets to 1357. He is left for dead.
Baretta: Blows himself up with his own grenade as he hits his marker, thus he dies in 2003 (He also blows up the time machine).
Decker/De Kere: Dies in the battle of La Roque when the French army attack the castle.
André Marek: Chooses to remain in 1357 and get married to Claire.
Doniger: Steps into the time machine as Chris, Kate & Prof Johnston are coming back to the present. He gets his neck slashed by a knight's sword as soon as he gets to 1357. a5c7b9f00b
