The Interpol Agent Louis Salinger and his partner are investigating the International Bank of Business and Credit (IBBC). This investigation is with with the District Attorney, Eleanor Whitman, from Manhattan in a two hundred million dollars illegal business of weapons trading. They schedule a meeting with an insider informer from IBBC at the Central Station in Berlin; however his partner is mysteriously killed after the encounter. Salinger finds the identity of the informer when he sees that the Vice President of Acquisitions André Clement had died in a car accident. Salinger and Whitman head to Milan where they meet the politician Umberto Calvini, who is a big arms manufacturer, and he explains that IBBC is interested in buying the missile guiding system that he produces in his factory. When Calvini is murdered by a sniper in a political rally, Salinger and Whitman head to New York following the killer and later to Istanbul, and disclose a scheme of arms supply and destabilization of governments to make their nations slaves of debt. Further, the bank is protected by legal systems and only if Salinger crosses the line he might bring some justice to the corrupt system.

The previews I had seen interested me enough to rent this from our library. I was expecting something along the lines of a Ludlum-inspired Bourne-type movie. Boy was I disappointed. As many others have commented - the story was tedious and boring. You get somewhat interested at the beginning, then Owen and Watts get into this long long sequence where they fly somewhere, see the panoramic shot of another big building, go in, ask questions, look at each other, get no answers, then fly home. Over and over. Owen sleep walks thru this one. Watts, like another poster said, could have been played by your grandmother. **slight spoiler alert** The only good scene was the Guggenheim scene alluded to by others, and when the (I'm guessing) Mafia finally have enough of the bad guys and extract revenge. Otherwise, skip this one. Not even worth a rental or 2 hours of your time.
I will only say you haven't lived until you've seen the wholesale DESTRUCTION of the entire inside of the Guggenheim Museum as done in this film. Absolutely amazing. The original blueprints of the Guggenheim were used for this replica, and it took four months to build.
The hunky Clive Owen is the star of "The International," along with Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and an international cast; the movie was filmed in New York City, several locations in Germany, and in Turkey. It's based on the BCCI scandal.
Owen plays Louis Salinger, an Interpol agent working with the New York D.A.'s office, specifically Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) in an investigation of a powerful world bank engaged in many illegal activities, including arms trading and destabilizing governments. Going on an international chase, they soon learn that the bank thinks nothing of dispatching assassins to make sure they keep on their agenda.
This is a very exciting, fast-moving film with gorgeous scenery. The characters aren't well developed, we get to see only aspects of them -- only Watts has a home life. Nevertheless the acting is very good - Owen and Watts are two wonderful pros, and Armin Mueller-Stahl can always be counted on for an interesting performance.
This is from Tom Tykwer, of "Run Lola, Run" fame, so it is highly recommended.
Both actors (Owens and Watts) seem mildly aggrieved (and not at all convincing) at having to play characters considerably less intelligent than themselves in a movie that plays even dumber.
The International is an original screenplay by screenwriter Eric Singer. The screenplay is supposedly based on two financial corporations—the Canadian-based Permindex Trade Organization and the Pakistani-based Bank of Credit and Commerce International.
