After seven years in solitary, Jake Green is released from prison. In the next two years, he amasses a lot of money by gambling. He's ready to seek his revenge on Dorothy (Mr. D) Macha, a violence-prone casino owner who sent Jake to prison. He humiliates Macha in front of Macha's lieutenants, leaves, and keels over. Doctors tell him he has a rare disease and will die in three days; Macha also puts a hit out on him. Loan sharks, Zack and Avi, demand Jake's cash and complete fealty in return for protection. Jake complies, and through narration and flashbacks, we watch him through at least three days of schemes, danger, and redemption. Who is his greatest enemy?
Jake Green is a hotshot gambler, long on audacity and short on common sense. He's rarely allowed to play in any casino because he is a winner. Jake has taken in so much money over the years, he is the only client of his accountant and older brother Billy. One night, Jake, Billy and their other brother Joe are invited to sit in on a private game, where Jake is expected to lose to Dorothy Macha, a crime boss and local casino owner who can't play for squat, but always wins because people are too scared to beat him. Jake isn't afraid of Macha, and not only beats Dorothy in a quick game of chance, but takes every possible opportunity to insult the man. Jake and his brothers leave the game, and Macha puts out the order for a hit on Jake, who ends up working for and being protected by a pair of brothers, Avi and Zack, who are out to take Macha down.
Of course I won't tell you any of rules mentioned in film... see them for yourself. Just want to say that you won't blow your time watching this movie.
OK, so Guy Ritchie, took one big, big step, far away from his previous hits "Lock, Stock,..." and "Snatch", but I think it was worth it.
First of all, this movie is really confusing, unless you watch it 2-3 times again... story is complicated, and revealed step by step later on. But the main thing that kept me within is "deep meaning" sentences about our living, struggle, about cons, cheating, gaining advantage on your "opponents" and about some basic rules of our "everyday life" games.
Jason Statham did his acting part very good, playing the cold guy on the outside, but also a guy who question his inside personality... of course Ray Liotta did his part well, too, and so did the other guys like Andre Benjamin, who actually surprised me with his acting skills.
I'll add another thing about movie... it survived very different opinions, good and bad critics, but like I say always: "twisted words, enigmatic sentences and phrases are my passion", so 8.5/10 for this piece.
Let me be very honest at the beginning. This is my first review of a film on IMDb and I am not very much into this job of commenting on films, but I do like to talk about films that enthrall me. So here it is...
I'd seen only one film by Mr. Guy Ritchie before this- 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'. And I was left spellbound by the story, the treatment, the portrayal of events, the ease with which guns go boom. That's a masterpiece.
And now comes Revolver- another riveting, truly indulging film by Mr. Ritchie. What more can I say than that it prompted me to post a comment. To me, it's a piece of cinematic art. The plot is superb, the storytelling great and the dialogs sound like quotable quotes (Some of them really are). You watch these two films and you will know that the director is an Artist. I am very much disappointed to see its poor rating. May be it has something to do with the story or dialogs. The dialogs seem to be more belonging to a book on Human Psychology than to a commercial Hollywood stuff. But that's the beauty of the film. If you understand them, you will love this movie.
One more thing--watch out for one scene of shootout (though it's done by one man only) and you will just praise Mr. Ritchie. He can even turn shooting people into a sort of art as he did it in 'Lock, Stock...', too. Violence can never be so fascinating as it is in these two films.
Please don't go by it's rating. It's a must watch. I give 10/10.
Part gambling heist, part graphic novel, part metaphysical mumbo jumbo, Revolver is a mess of many colors, few of them satisfying.
