Best friends, Marie and Alexia, are driving out to a peaceful rural weekend to visit Alexia's parents in their secluded cottage, unbeknownst to them that a deranged and utterly sadistic killer is prowling the area, hacking and slashing for his perverse pleasure. As a result, in the dead of night, a brutal massacre will follow where none shall be spared except for the helpless Alexia who will end up as the madman's hostage. Inevitably, with Marie as the sole survivor, a sinister cat-and-mouse game will soon begin, as the young woman will do anything in her power to save her friend. But is this the end of the nightmare?
Best friends Marie and Alexia decide to spend a quiet weekend at Alexia's parents' secluded farmhouse. But on the night of their arrival, the girls' idyllic getaway turns into an endless night of horror.
I do have to say that this is a well done movie especially for a French film. The last 20 minutes of the film was very confusing. Lots of things just didn't add up. Who ran Marie off the road? Who drove the truck while she was in the back with Alex? Who lifted up the mattress when Marie was hiding under the bed in the beginning? Who was in the room with Alex when her little brother was shot? Who the hell was Marie suffocating? Was she beating herself? Lots of confusion there. Once you see the ending, none of it makes sense! Overall the title fits perfectly. Lots of tension there! It just doesn't make sense! The Fight Club-esquire ending kind of ruined it or they could have edited the film a little better to make it all tie in and fit with the rest of the film. At least with Fight Club it all made sense at the end when it was all revealed.
I enjoyed the movie. Lots of blood and gore. Not so much scary but just GORY. A movie you won't watch more than once...it won't make sense no matter how many times you watch it!

This was my original comment for this film that i wrote.__
"When I heard that there was a really good, scary, unique, french film out called HIGH TENSION, I needed to see it. Many people were apparently disturbed by this film and people have been arguing whether the film was gory for a reason. I love controversial films. I've seen them all. STRAW DOGS, DAY OF THE WOMAN, FIGHT CLUB, IRREVERSIBLE, THE PASSION, THE LAST TEMTATION, I can't get enough of it. That's why I was immensely happy when I was finally able to watch this.
The plot goes like this. Two girlfriends, Marie and Alexia are going to one of their parents house to work on a project of some kind. They get their, but on the way, a man in a big truck who looks like someone's grandfather, drops a severed head(blink and you'll miss him having oral sex with it) out of the window. Once they do get to the house, they hang around for what seems like not even an hour before the old man decides to murder Alex's parents, her brother, and her dog. The weak old man kidnaps Alex, and it is all up to Marie to save her.
Sounds good, doesn't it? Well unfortunately, its not. For after Alex's dad is murdered, the film becomes stupid. Well...maybe not the film, but the character, Marie, who doesn't do a smart thing from here on out. Want an example? There is a sequence where she must sneak from the killer's truck and into a gas station. Why sneak? the killer hasn't even seen her yet. It gets worse though. When she gets inside, she tells the guy at the desk to call the police. The killer comes in. SHE HIDES!!!? Why!!! The part that really made me laugh was the part where she calls the cops and then hangs up on them for asking what gas station she's at! Sheesh! There's a part in a bathroom where the killer takes a leak and she still doesn't run!!!
I eventually began to think that the french are just afraid of stupidity. But i know this isn't true as i have seen some truly frightening french films. She has many chances to escape from the killer, and even looks like she could take the killer head on if she wanted to since the killer is probably the most least scary looking film villain of the year. What is so threatening about a big fat old man who is as slow as sin and doesn't even act mean? Maybe if he were a Vietnam vet?
Doesn't matter, because the deal with him is a lot more complicated than it should be. The film has a twist ending that isn't too great What makes it bad is the fact that one too many hints are mentioned that are completely miss able. I watched closely though! I figured out the ending about halfway through. It does not really bother me though because it is not as disappointing as the rest of the film.
Is there any good thing about this film? Well, yes. The director of this film, Alexandre Aja, does have the potential to make a truly horrifying film. Throughout the film, there are little details here and there that make the film's mood come out a little bit more. Alexandre Aja really knows how to set the mood of a horror film. He has great potential to make something really horrifying. He may very well be the next Wes Craven. Unfortunitely, if he continues to make films that are this bad, I may start to question the thought. I was again disappointed be THE HILLS HAVE EYES in which he remade and overdid to the point of being quite hate-able."__
I have since watched this film multiple times and have really gotten to like it. Sure, its definitely not a masterpiece. Its not even a horror masterpiece. But the film is undeniably likable. I love the whole grainy feel of this film and all the dark and dull colors that litter the screen during all the scenes save for the first few. Sure, the film is stupid, and sure, the film is cheesy, but the film does a great job of making itself feel or look like something that is both of these things. I was unfair to this film when i first saw it because it was not harrowing or disturbing or suspenseful like i thought it would be. But if the main female character(who looks like the most beautiful man i've ever seen) hadn't made so many poor decisions in trying to evade the monster, and if the monster weren't cheesy and slow, the film would probably be extremely horrifying. As for the ending, I still like it. Even if it confirms the film as a joke, i still love the whole maniacal tone that is exhibited in the last quarter of the film. For the whole mood bit, this film does pretty much everything right. It has creepy and cool music that generally fits the mood of teach scene, this film looks pretty nasty, ad the acting job by the whole cast is good enough. Forget what i said before. I do recommend this film, because even though it fails at being a genuine horror film, it gets extremely close. Overall, director Alexandre Aja is headed in the right direction, and if he can hold back with making stuff like THE HILLS HAVE EYES(2005), he could be one of the best and most talented horror film makers out there.
Rated NC-17 for strong graphic violence.
While the acting is fine and the direction accomplished, the real stars of the film are editor Baxter and cinematographer Maxime Alexandre. Forfeiting a gold star is whoever haphazardly dubbed the film, simply giving up about halfway through.
"Sara 'Perche' Ti Amo" by Ricchi & Poveri. "Runaway Girl" by U. Roy. "New Born" by Muse. "Superstar" by Sonic Youth, which is a cover of "Superstar" by The Carpenters. You can view the film in three ways:
(1) U.S. English Language Dubbed Version - everything is dubbed in English.
(2) U.S. Unrated Version - half of the film is subtitled, and half of the film is dubbed (which is how it was released in theaters).
(3) Original French Language Director's Cut Version - everything is in French.
The film itself is the same no matter which version you choose. The only problem with choosing the Original French Language Director's Cut Version is that the subtitles are not entirely accurate. There were lines added in the U.S. English Dubbed Version, so if you choose to view the film in French, the English subtitles will sometimes display lines that are not being said by anyone. For the US theatrical release, the film was rated R by the MPAA. To achieve this, the film had to be cut heavily. More than one minute of violence is missing in different scenes.
The Korean DVD is censored as well. Nearly 1 minute is missing in this version. Yes--it's loosely based on the novel Intensity by Dean Koontz. A soundtrack album featuring François-Eudes Chanfrault's electronic score was supposed to be released by Thrive Records in the United States, but it was ultimately canceled. On the composer's official Web site (http://personal.computer.free.fr/web/) a link is available to stream "Faustina Mauricio Mercedes Part IV." If you dig deeply enough through the coding, however, about 30 minutes of audio from the score can be downloaded. The 2005 US DVD of High Tension had to be retouched before its release. However, the content that had to be removed from the movie was not of a violent nature, as one might suspect. Instead, the Jack Daniel's logo was removed every time it could be seen. Unfortunately, we do not know why this happened and whether it was someone from Lionsgate or someone from Jack Daniel's who stepped in. a5c7b9f00b
