When a scientist sent back to the prehistoric era strays off the path he causes a chain of events that alters history in disastrous ways. 2055, Charles Hatton has made a fortune by founding 'Time safari', which offers rich 'big game hunters' short time travels to kill off dinosaurs just before their natural death. When Travis notices the weather and wildlife are not behaving as usual, he consults Dr. Rand, the contractually invisible inventor of the supercomputer which controls the time travel. They soon face 'time waves', each worsening the effects in 2055 of evolutionary distortions, lower lifeforms first. They attempt to identify and rectify the past alteration, but each attempt gets harder in their distorted present. This was an exciting movie that is not as bad as the reviews would indicate. The effects of futuristic Chicago are pretty bad, but the creatures they encounter are pretty realistic. Watched it with the family and it scared them. The acting was pretty straightforward B movie, but it had more thrills than the Grudge or the Ring. The concept is the same basic one as the Butterfly Effect or even 13 going on 30....if you change something in the past, it has big implications on the future. Since this comes from the Ray Bradbury short story it pre-dates the other movies, even if the release of this movie does not. This is a good movie to rent on a Saturday night or to watch on cable. ASoT is a pretty entertaining adventure movie that is hopelessly ruined (at least for anyone that has an IQ) by the hideous lack of thought that went into the plot.

Time-travel is not a new concept. Everyone has been doing movies and TV shows with that concept for countless years. All of them (well, maybe not all) have found ways to avoid or ignore the inherent paradox incumbent in the concept. ASoT not only fails to do this, but it's own (lack of) logic is violated during the course of the movie purely for the sake of "making the story more exciting", or some such idiotic notion. As a result, nobody could sit through this and not go "Hang on a moment...." Here's the problem....

Time travelers go back to the Cretaceous period to kill a dinosaur - a sort of big game hunt for the rich. We learn that the dinosaur is fated to die at the exact spot that they kill it anyway, trapped in a tar pit, so they aren't changing history at all. The entire incident is carefully orchestrated so as to avoid any "mishaps" that might cause a paradox. Fair enough so far. The team return safely having dispatched the said dino.

However, the next batch of rich, big game hunter-wannabees that go back in time, go back to the exact same time and place and kill the exact same prehistoric beastie. There is nary a sign of the previous expedition. Nada. Zilch. We even learn that they have done this particular "hunt" many times before.

But, having ignored this glaring time (and script) paradox, the writers then decide that, as it later becomes necessary in the story to correct the time-line, they must send someone back to stop this second group of hunters from mucking things up. Which they then do.

As I said, there is a good story here struggling to escape the ineptitude of the script-writers, but it struggles in vain since the above plot-crater is not the only ugly nonsense to rear its head.

Apparently, in order to prevent contamination of the past, a kind of force-field road is created for the hunters to walk on which floats a few inches above the real ground. However, this road continues off into the distance, way past where the "hunt" takes place. I'm sure it would have made more sense to terminate the road at that spot, thus preventing any exploring on the part of the tourists (or any chance of them being out of range of the recording device). But then that would have been counter-productive to the plot, so its a no-no. Of course, the thought also occurs that, if they could create this "force-road" why didn't they make a force-tunnel and simply have a window in it at the appropriate spot. Again, of course, counter-plot-ductive.

We are also treated to the (interesting) concept of the "time-wave", whereby altering the past causes "waves" of disruption to sweep forward through time (at convenient, but entirely arbitrary, intervals) affecting everything in their path. Oops! Sorry, I fixed a script problem there in my description. I should have ended with "affecting things in their path in order of importance to the story".

Yes, sadly, the time-waves affect the climate first, then plant-life, then animal and, finally, human life (which is laughably referred to as "the last, most evolved life-form". This is entirely a plot device to prolong the time changes and "add excitement". But instead no consistent explanation of this "phenomenon" is put forward to account for it. So it makes no sense whatsoever to anyone with even half a brain.

The effects are somewhat cheap - certainly no ILM or Weta quality graphics on display here. But the irritating plot problems are so glaring that they far outweigh any troubles the CGI might have. Likewise the acting is competent enough for the most part - or maybe I wasn't paying that much attention, being as I was, so involved in trying to rationalise the plot.

In short, the basic story has potential, but is screwed-over royally by the inability of the writers to come up with a way of using time-travel that doesn't insult the viewer. I tried to think of it as some kind of "multi-dimensional" thing, but they kept calling it time-travel and ruining my rose-tinted view of it, so to Hell with them.

Nice story, shame about the realisation. The picture looks as murky as its story line, the sound is tinny, much of the dialogue is flat or confoundingly technical or merely risible, and most everything on the screen looks patently fake. a5c7b9f00b
