As the holy acrimonious crusades swept through Middle East, nomad Turkish tribes fought their way into the new promised land. A young but brave warrior, Erutgrul Ghazi, the son of Suleiman Shah after the death of his father had to take charge of the situation in his tribe. From crusaders to Byzantine, Ertugrul together with his companions strived through the bad doers. A huge problem showed up in the horizon. The malicious Mongols with the maverick Noyan in charge threatened their camp.
A Turkish warrior named Ertugrul from the 13th century, one of the most famous warriors of his time, and also the father of Osman (the founder of the ottoman empire). He is a ambitious man who wants to bring peace and peace. He is in a war with the crusaders at one side, the Byzantines at another side and the brutally expending mongols who killed a lot of Turks at another side. In between this he is in a psychological war between his love and his so called destiny.
I binge-watched it! I am hoping there is another season.The fight scenes are beautifully choreographed,the Arabian horses are magnificent,the story carries you along with Muslim ethics, love, laughter, sorrow, and dealing with tough times (the Turk-men are squeezed between the Mongols and the Crusaders). There is NO sex!! Which is refreshing. The acting is sheer perfection! Little money was wasted on special effects but good enough. Need to think of it like a play. Gore seems to be censored. If you are like me, from the US viewing on Netflix, need the subtext, and know little about Turkish history and even less about Islam, you are going to have to be patient. It is dubbed by a non- English speaker; the worst I have ever had to deal with. You have to be able to read very fast and think even faster to figure out what the heck was MEANT to be said. Additionally, the series is set about 700 years ago and modern American idioms are used a lot, sometimes quite humorously, but, I admit, effectively. The series moves at the pace of a soap opera. Tolerance is also needed. When they gleefully talk about killing non- Muslims, remember, neither the Crusaders nor the Mongols were Muslim. There is a great deal of insight available here in a very entertaining format. Will send you to Wikipedia to learn more. Propaganda? Probably. So were John Wayne war movies. Case you didn't know, Turkey is going through a rough patch right now. May they flow like water.

If you are curious about real Muslim spirit, or fund of historical dramas, you will like it, guaranteed. The series seems offensive against non-Muslims, which shouldn't be surprising since almost all of the Hollywood movies are biased, or even hateful against Muslims. However, it is not the truth. In the series, non-Muslims can bee good as well, in fact, some of them played key roles on the success of Ertugrul (such as gold master Hachaturian and Elenora, etc). Time is towards the end of the Anatolian Seljuk and, historically, these times were very complex for Islamic world. The mongols were threatening the Islamic and non-Islamic world and Anatolian Seljuk was the only resistance against the Mongols. So, from this perspective, the threat of Mongols was a uniting force of Muslims and non-Muslims. You can watch episodes related to Mongols and see what really happened under Mongolian threat. Then, towards the last 40 episodes, Ertugrul found his way to the surroundings of Byzantines Empire and their small feudatories. These, episodes are not historically correct, however, they were captivating and enjoying. This is, after all, a drama, not a historically accurate documentary. Also, keep in mind that, at the end you know that Ertugrul will have success and found the Ottoman Empire. So, knowing how it will end actually spoils everything :) Thus, forget thinking about the foundation of Ottoman Empire, think it as if Ertugrul will not succeed at the end. This makes it more enjoyable.
Overall, I enjoyed it a lot. And, in fact, I found it even better than Game of Thrones or Vikings (though, Vikings is much closer to Ertugrul's quality).
