It is 1940's China, and gangs rule the city. The most notorious of them all is the axe gang, lead by the insane Brother Sum. A slum called Pig Sty Alley is the only area safe from the Axes because the people there are so poor. Soon, wannabe gangster Sing and his pal Bone attempt to extort money out of a barber and fail, drawing the real Axe Gang to Pig Sty. However, it turns out that there are several kung fu masters living in the slum, and soon the two sides are enemies. As the plot thickens, Sing must decide- should he become a mobster, or save the day?
In Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious "Axe Gang" while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf.
Upon hearing about this film I became skeptical of the idea of a comedy based around Kung Fu, and I worried that a good job would not be done and that it would be quite a struggle to enjoy with the drama mixed in. I was proved wrong -- I found that the film was magniciently sequenced from beginning to end, with very interesting and innovative fight scenes, as well as with the proper comic relief.
The acting was very professional and genuine, with the characters being portrayed well. It was easy to become sucked into the story with the terrific acting of everyone involved.
The story was top, with each new twist and turn making me more interested in the plot of the film as a whole. When the film ended, I was left fulfilled with the story and quite excited about the whole ordeal, hoping that more work along these lines would be done in the future. A tremendous triumph for cinema.
OK, I don't usual post comments or my own opinions here, but this movie definitely deserved my songs of praise.
I loved every single aspect of this movie, the slapstick humour was at times, unbearably funny... the cgi and action sequences were on a par with the matrix (just looked better in KFH to me with the amazing Asian art direction) the characters and acting were just awesome. i LOVED this movie.
my dad recommended i watch chows previous films (god of cookery, shaolin soccer etc) which i did at the first opportunity and i have to say, I'm now chow's number 1 fan. I REALLY hope this gets the US/EU release it deserves....

Chow manages to have his cake and eat it too: Kung Fu Hustle is a kung fu parody that's also a terrific kung fu movie.
In contrast to the rest of the world the US-DVD is slightly censored in terms of violence and features some alternative shots of non-violent scenes.
It is assumed that Sony Pictures tried to trim the film to get a PG-13 rating, yet it still ended up with an R rating. While the footage in the uncut version is on par with an R-rated level of violence, Sony most likely didn't want to pay to resubmit the film in its uncut form for an R, so they just went with the version they initially submitted to the MPAA. a5c7b9f00b
